Coffee cultivation contributes to poverty reduction

Việt NamViệt Nam01/10/2024

Mr. Khoang’s coffee plantation in Khoang Bien village is located in the high-tech coffee production area of Chieng Dong commune. Since switching to coffee cultivation, his family’s life has changed significantly.

Mr. Lo Van Khoang - Khoang Bien Village, Chieng Dong Commune, Mai Son, Son La : Since then, the commune's policy has been to encourage the conversion to coffee cultivation. In addition to the 1 hectare of coffee that our family has, my family has contracted another 2 hectares. Each year, we earn about 30-40 tons of fresh coffee, after deducting expenses, we earn about 400-500 million VND. My family also has savings, is quite well-off, and is now building a spacious house and I am very excited.

Currently, Chieng Dong commune has 730 hectares of coffee, of which 418 hectares are high-tech coffee. To develop sustainable coffee, the commune has guided people to implement the clean coffee production process, from selecting seeds, planting, caring to harvesting and consuming products; the coffee harvested by people is 95% or more ripe to ensure quality standards.

Ms. Lo Thi Cuong - President of the Farmers' Association of Chieng Dong Commune, Mai Son, Son La: The Farmers' Association of the commune has promoted and mobilized people to change the structure of intensive crop cultivation to increase productivity of coffee trees, in coordination with the district's agricultural service center to open training courses on pruning techniques as well as canopy shaping and fertilizing coffee trees, thereby improving the coffee yield as well as the quality of coffee in Chieng Dong commune.

Currently, Mai Son district has 2 recognized high-tech coffee production areas. This locality also has 3 enterprises and 6 cooperatives participating in the chain of coffee production, consumption and processing.

Ms. Cam Thi Mon - Director of Ara-Tay Coffee Cooperative, Chieng Chung Commune, Mai Son, Son La: Currently, the cooperative's raw material area is in Chieng Chung and Muong Chanh communes. The cooperative has 300 satellite households to supply fresh fruit to the cooperative. Our cooperative produces 2 product lines, Neytro and Hanny, with an annual output of 8-10 tons of green beans.

Mai Son district currently has more than 8,500 hectares of coffee trees, of which the harvested area is estimated at 7,600 hectares and 3,800 hectares of coffee meeting 4C, UTZ, RA, VietGAP standards and equivalent standards. Many programs and projects to support sustainable coffee development have been and are being implemented by this locality.

Mr. Nguyen Khac Hao - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Mai Son District, Son La: Along with planning concentrated production areas and applying techniques to coffee trees, in recent times, the district has focused on promoting the direction of enterprises, cooperatives, and people to build CNC production areas, focusing on coffee trees. It can be seen that, up to now, Mai Son district's coffee trees have also built a brand and created a stable and sustainable production chain.

In 2024, the coffee output in Mai Son is expected to reach over 86,200 tons of fresh fruit, down about 19.8% compared to 2023, but with good implementation of care processes, linkages, and product consumption, Mai Son farmers hope for a good coffee season, to have a stable and sustainable income. /.
