These days, in the safe vegetable fields of Tu Nhien residential group, farmers are urgently harvesting cabbage, tomatoes, and kohlrabi, which are vegetables that were previously only grown in winter. These results are thanks to farmers applying science and technology to production; investing in greenhouses, net houses, sprinkler and drip irrigation systems, helping farmers master the production process, minimizing risks of weather, pests, and pesticides.
With more than 10 years of production experience, nearly 40 members of the Tu Nhien Safe Vegetable Cooperative, in the Tu Nhien residential group, grow 32 types of vegetables, tubers, and fruits, with a total area of more than 25 hectares. The Cooperative applies techniques to grow off-season vegetables, year-round, so consumption is convenient and the economic value is high. At this time, the Cooperative mainly grows tomatoes, cabbage, kohlrabi, and spices; expected to harvest more than 2,000 tons of vegetables, supplying supermarkets and wholesale markets.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Luyen, Director of Tu Nhien Safe Vegetable Cooperative, shared: To produce off-season vegetables, the Cooperative has invested in building 12 hectares of greenhouses, net houses and mist and drip irrigation systems on 100% of the Cooperative's vegetable production area; products are labeled with traceability stamps and codes for each member household. The selling price of vegetables at this time is also higher than last year, each hectare brings in a profit of about 500 million VND/year.
In Na Kien village, Moc Son ward, Mr. Nguyen Huy Dong's family is actively taking care of and harvesting off-season tomatoes, ensuring quality to meet market demand. Mr. Dong shared: Realizing the economic efficiency of growing off-season vegetables, the family has invested in building a greenhouse, an automatic irrigation system to grow more than 1 hectare of tomatoes and only uses biological pesticides. This year's tomato crop, the family expects to harvest 50 tons of fruit, with an average selling price of 22,000 VND/kg.
Currently, the entire Moc Son ward has more than 300 hectares of various vegetables, of which more than 100 hectares are planted with off-season vegetables. The ward has coordinated with specialized agencies to organize training courses to guide farmers on how to research the market, orient the production of vegetables suitable to the needs and in a safe and effective direction. At the same time, create conditions and attract enterprises and cooperatives to link production and consume vegetable and root products for farmers. Up to now, in the area, there are many cooperatives and enterprises investing in the production of high-quality vegetables and flowers, such as: Green farm company; Tu Nhien safe vegetable cooperative; Ang organic cooperative; Moc Chau organic agricultural products cooperative; Moc Chau clean agricultural products and food cooperative...
Ms. Tran Thi Huong, Vice Chairman of Moc Son Ward People's Committee, said: Growing off-season vegetables is an effective solution to the problem of consumption market, increasing economic efficiency per unit of production land area. Through the policies of the Central Government and the province, the ward promptly supports businesses, cooperatives and farmers in terms of techniques, production capital, management skills and product consumption. Up to now, the whole ward has nearly 300 production establishments and households applying water-saving irrigation systems for more than 200 hectares of crops; more than 100 establishments and households investing in more than 60 hectares of greenhouses and net houses; 3 establishments applying good agricultural production practices VietGAP, GlobalGAP.
It can be seen that growing off-season vegetables according to VietGAP process and linking according to value chain has helped cooperatives and households in Moc Son ward change farmers' production habits and thinking, avoiding the situation of good harvest, low price, towards sustainable agricultural development.
