This year's durian season, the Ri6 specialty durian garden of Ms. Pham Thi Hau's family (village 1, Ea Lai commune, M'Drak district) has almost every tree full of fruit.

Ms. Hau said that since the beginning of the season, her family has sold more than 2 tons of fruit at 80,000 VND/kg. Currently, she still exports 1 - 1.5 quintals per day for local consumption. It is estimated that this year's harvest, her family's durian garden will yield over 7 tons; net profit after deducting expenses is over 300 million VND.

Ms. Hau's family started growing durian trees 13 years ago. At that time, after visiting durian models in the southwestern provinces, she and her husband bought some seedlings to plant in their home garden. After planting for a while, realizing that this was a new crop, suitable for local soil conditions, the couple decided to convert 2 hectares of ineffective coffee-pepper land to grow durian trees. To "take the short term to support the long term", creating a regular income, she planted 300 more yellow-fleshed avocado trees. Currently, her home garden has more than 100 durian trees; of which nearly 50 trees have been harvested, with an average yield of 7 - 8 tons of fruit/crop, and an average income of 300 - 400 million VND/year.

According to Ms. Hau, the durian variety she grows is Ri6, the fruit is round and has green skin; when ripe, the fruit weighs about 3 - 5 kg; the flesh is dry and thick, the flesh is bright yellow, sweet and fatty, moderate aroma, so it is very popular with traders and consumers. Durian should be planted at moderate density, on average 1 hectare of land planted with 100 trees. To have high productivity, in addition to using irrigation water, fertilizers, and pesticides properly, growers need to increase the application of organic fertilizers and manure to supplement nutrients for the soil... On durian trees, there are often some harmful pests and diseases such as gummosis on the trunk, leaf burn, thrips and green leafhoppers, so it is necessary to spend a lot of time visiting the garden to promptly detect diseases, spray pesticides periodically, and limit the invasion of pests and diseases.

According to Ms. Hau, to bring high economic efficiency and avoid "flooding the market", growers often treat off-season durian, but if the gardener abuses the treatment continuously, it will lead to tree failure. Therefore, her family takes turns letting the tree flower earlier than the favorable season. In particular, when caring for durian trees during the flowering period, it is necessary to pay attention to tightening water and spraying pesticides to differentiate flower buds. The dry period lasts at least 10 - 14 days for the durian tree to differentiate flower buds. When bearing fruit, she often prunes the bad fruits and focuses on nutrition to nourish the remaining fruits. Each tree, the couple leaves about 50 fruits.

After each harvest season, in order for the durian tree to recover quickly, it is necessary to provide and replenish the soil with the nutrients that have been absorbed and consumed. Fertilization is the most important, must follow the "4 rights" principle: right type, right dosage, right time and right way, divided into 3 fertilization periods depending on the growth stage of the tree. Before fertilizing, use a hoe to lightly dig around the tree canopy, avoid damaging the roots or dig a trench around the tree canopy, then fertilize and cover the soil. Fertilizing about 10 - 15 days after harvest is best.

Currently, the durian growing model of Ms. Hau's family is being visited, studied, applied and replicated by many women's association members and farmers.
