Growing lotus to exploit flowers

Việt NamViệt Nam24/06/2024

Growing lotus seeds is a traditional occupation of people in many low-lying areas in the province. In the past, lotus plants grew especially well in the communes along the Red River dike, where there are many ponds, lakes, and marshes in Duy Tien town and Ly Nhan district. In recent years, lotus growing has expanded to other localities inside the dike. The lotus growing area has developed with many new lotus varieties in the direction of flower exploitation to help promote economic efficiency.

Lotus cultivation for flower exploitation is being promoted, mainly concentrated in Duy Tien town and Phu Ly city. Lotus flowers are divided into 2 types, lotus used for decoration in vases with many new types of lotus, including imported lotus; lotus used for tea infusion, focusing on the fragrant cypress variety. Currently, the demand for cypress lotus flowers for tea infusion is quite large because this is a typical local product. Lotus flowers in vases are also loved and chosen by many people during the flowering months.

Ms. Nguyen Thi My Dung (Thanh Chau ward, Phu Ly city) is passionate and often plays with lotus flowers. She shared: During lotus season, her house always has this type of flower. Lotus flowers are easy to play with, and you can change the way you arrange them to always have freshness. Currently, there are many types of beautiful and durable lotus flowers. If you know how to care for them, they can be arranged for 3-5 days. Compared to many other types of flowers, lotus flowers are beautiful and the price is also very reasonable for the majority of players.

In fact, lotus growers are tending to expand their acreage. The lotus growing model of Ms. Tran Thi Tu (village 5, Phu Van commune, Phu Ly city) initially had an area of 1 hectare, but has now been expanded more than twice. The types of lotus she brings to grow are also more diverse, with many imported varieties with beautiful and durable flower shapes and colors, such as: Supper, Anh Duong, Jwaba, golden apple, golden autum, Thanh Tam jade, diamond red...

The lotus growing area of Mr. Le Van Ngoc (Huong Cat residential group, Duy Hai ward, Duy Tien town) currently has an area of over 20 hectares, 3 times higher than last year. This is a low-lying rice field that local people no longer need to produce, so he rented it for production. Mr. Ngoc has brought back 24 lotus varieties for flowers to serve the needs of vase decoration, which are popular with players. Almost all new lotus varieties for flowers are collected by him and brought back to grow. The current lotus consumption market is quite large, last year he planted 7 hectares and sold all to only one agent.

This year, the area has increased, the amount of lotus flowers is more, during the peak harvest period, 30,000 - 50,000 flowers/day. Mr. Ngoc is continuing to expand the market to provinces and cities with about 25 consumption points. The value of lotus flowers is quite high. Lotus fields for flowers are grown stably in the main harvest season, from 200 - 300 flowers/sao/day, sold at a wholesale price of 2,000 VND/flower. Lotus flowers grown for decorative vases have a very long exploitation time, from 5 - 8 months/year (depending on the type). In addition, lotus plants provide additional income from exploiting and selling seeds to those in need.

According to Mr. Ngoc, as society develops, more and more people are playing with lotus flowers. Not only focusing on the full moon and the first day of the lunar month like before, people now play with lotus flowers on normal days as well. In addition to playing with flowers, some households with space also buy seeds to plant in decorative pots.

With lotus flowers exploited for tea, currently in the province there are about 4-5 establishments specializing in making lotus scented tea. The lotus scented tea product of Hoang Tra establishment (Phu Van commune, Phu Ly city) is recognized as an OCOP product (One Commune One Product Program), ranked 3 stars; the lotus tea-perfuming establishment of Mr. Nguyen Thanh (in Duy Tien town) is cooperating with households in Dong Van ward, Duy Minh... to cultivate nearly 30 hectares of lotus flowers. The amount of lotus produced is enough to need to scent more than 3,000 kg of lotus tea sold by the establishment to the market. Growing lotus flowers for tea scenting brings a production value of over 80 million VND/ha from the beginning of May to the end of August (about 4 months), 1.5 times higher than growing lotus for traditional seeds. The lotus material in tea alone accounts for 60% of the product value.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh, owner of a lotus tea-scented facility, said: Growing lotus flowers for the purpose of harvesting the product is only a difficult task for about 4 months. Ha Nam lotus tea is now known to consumers in all provinces and cities. Certainly, in the coming seasons, the area of lotus cultivation for tea-scented tea will continue to be maintained and expanded.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Cua, Director of the Agricultural Extension Center (Department of Agriculture and Rural Development), growing lotus flowers to exploit flowers is a new and effective shift in the low-lying areas that are difficult to grow rice and other crops in the province. People can exploit the tourism experience by taking photos of lotus ponds to earn more income. Lotus fields in season create beautiful landscapes, helping many people know about Ha Nam. The Agricultural Extension Center has implemented technical guidance on growing this new lotus variety for people in some localities, helping to increase value and efficiency, gradually improving the lives of lotus growers.
