"There were 7 people in the house, all dead"
In a makeshift hut in the pouring rain, Mr. Hoang Van Thoi sat crying silently, holding two small wooden coffins. Inside were his one-year-old son and two-year-old nephew. Next to them were the bodies of his wife, mother and two children. " There were 7 people in the family, all dead . My wife and 3 children, my mother and my nephew were all swept away by the flood. There is nothing left in the house", the man cried silently, unable to speak. He kept crying "I lost everything, mother, wife, children". The man's cries made the people of Lang Nu village unable to hold back their tears.

"My mother and my children, more than a dozen people died here" "My mother and my children, more than a dozen people died here", Hoang Van Thoi, a survivor of the flash flood, sobbed. He recalled that on the night of September 9, Lang Nu village had heavy rain, the water level rose high on the Vang Cuong stream flowing in front of his house. Seeing that the hill behind his house was at risk of landslide, Thoi decided to take his mother and children to his sister's house on the other side of the stream.

"My wife, I and a sister-in-law stayed on this side because we thought we were healthy adults, and the house on the other side of the stream was safer, so we gave it to my mother and the children," Thoi shared. The "supposedly safe" house had all 11 of Thoi's relatives inside. But when the sky became light again, Thoi was shocked to see that the shelter of the 11 family members was reduced to nothing.

Need to complete the exact map of Lang Nu village to focus the search
Lao Cai Party Secretary Dang Xuan Phong said that from the morning of September 11, he will be the Commander-in-Chief of the search and rescue operation for the missing victims of the flash flood in Lang Nu village. Deputy Commander-in-Chief is Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Trinh Xuan Truong and Permanent Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee.

“The search plan must be effective, practical, and accurate,” as requested by the Lao Cai Provincial Party Secretary. He said that many forces are participating in the search, with about 200 officers and soldiers from Military Region 2 and 200 local forces. The immediate need is to complete an accurate map to focus the search.
“The search could take a week or longer,” said Mr. Phong, as it is very difficult to bring people and search equipment to the scene. Regarding the solution of using sniffer dogs to search for victims, the Lao Cai Party Secretary was concerned that if the victims were buried 5-7m deep, sniffer dogs would have a hard time finding them. A large area with hundreds of people living here for 5-6 generations has now become desolate because of the mud buried after the flash flood. “The flood came down from the top of the mountain, no one could have expected it,” said a resident, bursting into tears. An entire village with hundreds of people living here for a long time was wiped out after a flash flood. Survivors with red eyes are sitting on the banks of the stream waiting for news of their missing relatives. Meanwhile, authorities are urgently working to search and rescue. According to statistics, the total population of Lang Nu village is 760 people/167 households. The number of affected people is 158 people/37 households. Updated to 8:00 a.m. on September 11, Lao Cai provincial leaders said that 22 people died, 17 were injured and 73 people were still missing. Early in the morning of September 11, Chairman of Lao Cai Provincial People's Committee Trinh Xuan Truong went directly to the scene of the landslide and flash flood to inspect and direct the search for victims, and at the same time support affected households. Access to the scene is very difficult due to landslides everywhere and the small, muddy road, combined with heavy rain in the early morning, making it very difficult to access the scene. According to observations from the scene, houses swept away by the flood are lined up on both sides of the road. When the incident happened, people did not have time to react, only a few people managed to run back to higher ground and escaped death. When searching for the victims, people and authorities said they could only find some victims along the stream bank, the rest were too far away to reach. Directing at the scene, Lao Cai Province Chairman Trinh Xuan Truong asked Bao Yen District to check the affected households in the area to see how their lives and accommodation are. First of all, Mr. Truong requested relief of food, food and water for the people, and to bring them to safe places. Informing that Military Region 2 will take charge of the search and rescue, the Provincial Chairman said the government will cooperate in drawing up a map to calculate the search area. If the area is this vast, it will be very difficult to focus on the search, according to Mr. Truong. "We have to redraw the map of more than 30 households, see how many people each household has, to focus on the search. It is true that we never thought this area would be hit by such a terrible landslide and flash flood," said the Lao Cai Province Chairman. * Dan Tri reporter is present at the scene and continues to update.
