Pham Luan is a famous painter in the contemporary art world. He is famous for his impressionist landscape paintings with sunny streets, charming and dreamy flower fields, or vast blue seas.
Born in 1954, he has been holding a brush for 52 years, in his 70 years of life. And “From the first small paintings, he quietly bet his pure soul on life, on the profession in the sunny streets, flower villages, wandering confidently following the four seasons of nature and on all the paths that fate leads him to” (painter Luong Xuan Doan). This time, “The path that fate leads him to” is a portrait in an exhibition called “Pham Luan – Portrait”, held at the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum, Hanoi .
Artist Pham Luan shared at the exhibition event "Pham Luan - Portrait".
The exhibition displays nearly 60 portraits from hundreds of paintings he painted since the early days of his painting career. Notably, two-thirds of the paintings in this exhibition were created by him in the last two years. This is also the first time he has introduced to the public and art lovers his portrait works - a unique and special painting space of the talented artist that not everyone knows.
In the genre of landscape painting, painter Pham Luan is famous for his ability to skillfully express light, strong yet extremely delicate oil painting techniques. He continues to develop that strength in the genre of portrait painting.
For him, portraits must accurately represent the image and spirit of the person being painted. He does not indulge in clever embellishments but instead expresses his own free, natural, warm, and lyrical style. The most beautiful portraits are those he painted of his wife, children, siblings, colleagues, close friends, and… himself, simply because he “belongs” to them the most.

Notably, in the paintings of his friends, artist Pham Luan used quick strokes and blocks to create lines on the face, eyes, nose bridge, mouth corners, etc. He often painted with simple compositions, to focus on expressing the spirit, inner self and lively appearance of the characters, drawing from his many years of experience holding a brush.
From another perspective, in some portraits he mainly painted landscapes, with characters only being a highlight in the painting. Here, he continued to develop the strength of the landscape genre, combined with character portraits, creating a beauty that bears the mark of Pham Luan.
