On September 25, in response to a reporter's request for a response to China's installation and use of two automatic vessel identification stations at Da Bac and Da Bong Bay in Vietnam's Hoang Sa archipelago, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Pham Thu Hang stated:
“China's installation and use of two automatic vessel identification stations at Da Bac and Da Bong Bay in Vietnam's Hoang Sa archipelago is a violation of Vietnam's sovereignty over the Hoang Sa archipelago.
Any activity on the Hoang Sa archipelago without Vietnam's permission is a violation of Vietnam's sovereignty and is completely invalid.
Vietnam demands that China fully respect Vietnam's sovereignty over the Hoang Sa archipelago and not repeat similar violations."

Previously, according to Chinese television station CCTV, the operation of these stations began on September 15, to "solve the blind spot problem" in the waters around the Paracel Islands.
The two stations, located on North Reef and Bombay Reef, are linked to the land-based Automatic Identification System (AIS) for ships. The country has built two stations for the BeiDou satellite system, similar to the US Global Positioning System (GPS).
China's maritime administration requires all ships to have AIS transponders and keep their signals on at all times so they can be identified and tracked.
Vietnam has repeatedly affirmed that it has sufficient legal basis and historical evidence to assert its sovereignty over the Hoang Sa and Truong Sa archipelagos in accordance with international law.
