Nearly 250,000 people have been evacuated in eastern China as storms and rains have caused the Yangtze and other rivers to swell, state media reported on July 3.
China has endured extreme weather conditions in recent months, from torrential rainfall to scorching heatwaves.
The storms have affected 991,000 residents in Anhui Province and forced 242,000 people to evacuate, according to Xinhua. As of 4 p.m. on July 2, the storms had devastated 36 counties and districts in seven prefecture-level cities in Anhui. The Yangtze River, China's longest river, has exceeded the warning level in its section of Anhui and continues to rise. Torrential rains have also pushed water levels above the warning level in 20 other rivers and six lakes in the province.
The Hunan provincial government has raised its emergency response level due to severe rainfall and flooding. The National Disaster Reduction Commission has dispatched a team to guide and assist local governments in disaster relief and rescue work, aiming to ensure the basic needs of affected people.
