Russian state news agency RIA Novosti reported on December 26 about President Masoud Pezeshkian's visit to the land of birch trees, quoting Iranian Ambassador to Moscow Kazem Jalali.
Relations between Moscow and Tehran have deepened since the start of the conflict in Ukraine in 2022. Iran has supplied Russia with thousands of Shahed drones used in attacks on Ukraine, as well as short-range ballistic missiles.
Following the talks, President Masoud Pezeshkian and his host counterpart Vladimir Putin are expected to sign a new cooperation agreement, aimed at replacing the 20-year strategic agreement signed in 2001 and extended in 2020.
The two presidents first met on October 11 in Turkmenistan, within the framework of an international forum attended by leaders of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Tajikistan and many other countries.
After another meeting between Mr Putin and Mr Pezeshkian in Kazan in late October, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the new agreements must “formalize the parties’ commitment to close defense cooperation and interaction in the interests of regional and global peace and security”.
Reformist candidate Masoud Pezeshkian has won the country's second round of presidential elections, defeating hardline rival Saeed Jalili.
Iranians go to the polls to choose a successor to Ebrahim Raisi, who died in a helicopter crash in May.
Both Russia and Iran are under multiple sanctions from the US.
According to schedule, US President-elect Donald Trump will officially take office on January 20, after winning against Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in the presidential election early last month.
