Dong Nai College of Decorative Arts celebrates 120th anniversary

The 120th Anniversary Ceremony aims to review the history of formation and development; honor generations of teachers and students who have made many contributions to the development of the school over the past century...

In the early 20th century, the French rule over Indochina was relatively stable, so they began to open vocational schools (École professionnelle) which the people called "schools of arts". In the South during this period, there were Thu Dau Mot School of Arts (1900), Bien Hoa Vocational School (1903) and Saigon School of Arts (1913). Of these, Bien Hoa Vocational School (also known as Bien Hoa School of Arts) was the predecessor of today's Dong Nai College of Decorative Arts.

Through each period, according to its historical role and mission, the school had different names: Bien Hoa Native Fine Arts School (1913-1944); Bien Hoa Practical Fine Arts School (1944-1955); Bien Hoa Practical Fine Arts School (1955-1964), Bien Hoa Technical School (1964-1976), Dong Nai Industrial High School (1977), Dong Nai Decorative Arts High School (1978-1998). In 1998, the school was officially named Dong Nai Decorative Arts College.

Over the past 120 years, the school has trained many skilled workers known nationwide with 3 training majors considered to be strengths: ceramics, sculpture and graphics. These are 3 majors associated with historical traditions, inheriting the achievements, experiences and knowledge of the local craftsmen. In particular, when talking about the land of Bien Hoa - Dong Nai with a history of 325 years of formation and development, it is impossible not to mention the famous traditional ceramic products nationwide that Dong Nai College of Decorative Arts has contributed significantly to bringing the quintessence of Bien Hoa ceramics to many places.

There was a time when the school was considered a training place, a gathering place for talented artisans in ceramics, sculpture, graphics and later fashion design, interior design. In recent years, the school's enrollment work has gradually improved, creating a new vitality.

Dong Nai College of Decorative Arts currently has 6 training majors at two intermediate and college levels: Graphic Design, Interior Design, Multimedia Communications, Fashion Design, Ceramics and Sculpture. The training scale in the 2023-2024 school year is 301 intermediate level targets and 300 college level targets.

With the continuous efforts and dedication of the staff, employees and students through generations, Dong Nai College of Decorative Arts has been awarded many noble prizes by the Party and State such as: First, Second and Third Class Labor Medals; First and Second Class Independence Medals...

At the Anniversary Ceremony, the School inaugurated the relief work Nostalgia for Bien Hoa's Ba Nghe ; screened the documentary film "Definition from the school" called "Ba Nghe Bien Hoa" ; introduced the Ao Dai collection by designer Ta Linh Nhan, along with many other activities.

Deputy Minister Ta Quang Dong awarded the Commemorative Medal of the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism to 7 individuals.

On this occasion, the School was honored to be assigned by the People's Committee of Dong Nai province as the host unit, coordinating with the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Literature and Arts Association of Dong Nai province and the People's Committee of Bien Hoa City to organize the Bien Hoa - Dong Nai Ceramics Identification Exhibition. The activity is part of a series of practical activities to celebrate the 325th anniversary of Bien Hoa - Dong Nai.

Speaking at the Anniversary Ceremony, Dr. Truong Duc Cuong, Principal of the School, shared that despite many ups and downs and many name changes, the School has always affirmed its position and brand as a training institution for fine arts and applied arts, contributing to the socio-economic development of the Southern region and the country. That long journey has been recognized by the Party and the State with many noble awards...

“The highest achievement is that the school has created trust for society and businesses. We have the right to be proud of a school with a long history, a “brand”, and graduates all have stable jobs, work in the right profession and have high incomes.

Promoting the achievements, overcoming existing limitations, in the coming time, the School needs to uphold the spirit of solidarity, continue to overcome difficulties, maintain traditions, successfully implement the Resolution of the 13th National Congress and the Resolutions of Congresses at all levels to arouse the aspiration to develop a prosperous and happy country; promote cultural values, the strength of the Vietnamese people in the cause of building and defending the Fatherland, international integration... , focus on solutions to improve the quality of human resource training on par with international and regional standards, meeting the demands of society and businesses", Dr. Truong Duc Cuong emphasized.

Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Minister Ta Quang Dong, on behalf of the Party Committee and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, congratulated the School, generations of staff, lecturers, employees and students. “On behalf of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, I would like to acknowledge, commend and congratulate the School on its achievements in the past period of construction and development,” the Deputy Minister expressed.

Deputy Minister Ta Quang Dong said that Dong Nai College of Decorative Arts under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism is a unit that trains human resources in the field of applied arts in the Southern region in particular and the whole country in general. After 120 years of construction and development, the School has made many efforts to overcome all difficulties and challenges and achieved many outstanding results, becoming the cradle in training human resources in applied arts, contributing to preserving and promoting the traditional cultural and artistic values of the country.

“Over the past 120 years, generations of teachers and students of Dong Nai College of Decorative Arts have written glorious and proud pages of history. To continue to fulfill the mission of training cultural human resources for the country in the new period, meeting the general development of the Industry and realizing the trust and expectations of society, Deputy Minister Ta Quang Dong suggested that the School focus on a number of key tasks.

Accordingly, the School needs to promote a high sense of responsibility, initiative, dynamism, and the intelligence and talent of the leadership team, staff, lecturers, and students, actively and firmly implement the right to autonomy and self-responsibility, creating motivation and conditions for rapid and sustainable development. It is necessary to strongly implement solutions to build and develop a team of lecturers and managers with high political qualities, ethics, lifestyle and qualifications, meeting the requirements of the School's development and the development of the Industry. Be proactive in attracting excellent staff and teachers to teach; reward and honor talented, dedicated teachers who have made many contributions to the training career of the School.

Schools need to focus all resources, promote facilities, build and improve systems, training programs, subject curricula, strengthen international cooperation... proactively face and overcome challenges in the new situation. "It is necessary to pay special attention to educating and nurturing students comprehensively in morality, intelligence, physical fitness, aesthetics, especially taking care of building personality, beautiful lifestyle, professional ethics...", the Deputy Minister emphasized.

At the Ceremony, the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism awarded Commemorative Medals to 7 individuals; awarded the title of Emulation Fighter at the Ministry level to 1 individual; awarded Certificates of Merit to 3 groups and 4 individuals. The Chairman of Dong Nai Provincial People's Committee awarded Certificates of Merit to 4 groups and many individuals. The Director General of the General Department of Vocational Education (Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs) awarded Certificates of Merit to individuals.
