University removes strange admission combination and adds 3 points to candidates with IELTS from 4.0

Many strange admission combinations, without major subjects, key subjects, unrelated to the training program have been eliminated by universities, replaced by combinations with traditional subjects after receiving reactions from public opinion.

Hoa Binh University has just adjusted the admission combination for medical and traditional medicine majors to recruit 5 combinations, of which 4 combinations have Math and Biology, the remaining combination is Math - Physics - Chemistry.

With this adjustment, the school has eliminated strange admission combinations that do not have core subjects related to the training major, including: Math-Literature-English; Math-Physics-English; Literature-Math-Geography.

Similarly, Dong Thap University also adjusted the admission combination for many pedagogical majors by adding basic subjects such as Physics to the Physics pedagogical major; adding Chemistry to the Chemistry pedagogical major and Biology to the Biology pedagogical major.

Previously, the Physics Education Department of this school recruited the Math - Literature - English; Math - Literature - Chemistry combinations without Physics. Similarly, the Chemistry Education Department also recruited the Math - Literature - Physics combinations; Math - Literature - English combinations; Biology Education recruited the Math - Literature - Chemistry combinations...

The use of strange admission combinations by some universities has raised concerns about training quality.

Hanoi University of Culture has also just adjusted the priority points for candidates with IELTS certificates of 4.0 or higher. Accordingly, instead of adding 3 points for candidates with IELTS of 4.0 or higher, the bonus points will be adjusted in a more strict direction. Specifically, candidates with IELTS from 4.0 - 4.5 will be added 1 point; IELTS 5.0 will be added 2 points; IELTS 5.5 - 6.0 will be added 2.5 points, IELTS from 6.5 or higher will be added 3 points...

Previously, CAND Newspaper published an article reflecting on the appearance of some strange combinations, with no subjects directly related to the training major in the 2025 enrollment season, which made many people worry that it would cause difficulties in training, affecting the quality of human resources in the future.

Sharing with CAND Newspaper reporters on this issue, Dr. Le Viet Khuyen, Vice President of the Association of Vietnamese Universities and Colleges, said that expanding the admission combinations will help universities attract more candidates, especially candidates with strengths in different subjects, not being too limited in a fixed group of subjects. However, the combinations must accurately reflect the required capacity of the field of study, especially for fields that require solid foundational knowledge such as Pedagogy, Medicine, Information Technology, etc. If too many combinations are expanded without clear criteria and lacking basic subjects directly related to the training major, it will lead to inconsistent and unsecured input quality.

According to Dr. Le Viet Khuyen, core subjects often reflect the basic abilities of candidates. Therefore, if the History Education major does not require History, the Physics Education major does not require Physics, the English Language major does not require English, or the Medicine major does not require Chemistry or Biology, it will be very easy for students to not have a suitable knowledge base, causing difficulties in the learning process, affecting the quality of training later.

Therefore, as a State management agency in educational quality assessment, the Ministry of Education and Training is responsible for requiring universities to review and adjust inappropriate admission criteria and admission combinations that are criticized by public opinion in order to focus on learners and ensure the rights of learners. Expanding and not limiting admission combinations must have accompanying conditions. For example, admission combinations for majors must have compulsory subjects directly related to the training major.
