Nam Vi Primary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities - A place to help students in disadvantaged areas fulfill their dreams

Nestled in the middle of the Northwest mountains, Nam Vi Primary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities (Muong Nhe District, Dien Bien Province) is not only a simple school but also a place to sow seeds of hope and foster knowledge for ethnic minority children in the highland border areas.

Taking children to school has become a need of the ethnic people here.

The road to Nam Vi commune is quite winding and steep, passing through misty forest slopes. However, right in the middle of a place that seems isolated from the outside world , there is the sound of the school drum every early morning, the sound of children spelling, and the image of teachers who persistently stick to their villages and classes, like a flame that never goes out in the Northwest.

Taking us on a tour of the school campus, Ms. Dong Thi Thuy - Principal of the school - shared: In the 2024-2025 school year, the school has 647 students distributed across 6 campuses. Despite the lack of material conditions, the school's teaching staff always strives to improve the qualityof education . Each teacher and each staff member is imbued with the slogan: "Dedication, dedication, and effort - all for beloved students". That spirit is not only reflected in each lesson, each set of 100% good-graded lesson plans, but also spreads through movements and campaigns such as "Studying and following Ho Chi Minh's ideology, morality, and style", "Building a friendly school, active students"...

The lessons always become lively and interesting topics of discussion for both teachers and students.

“To improve the quality of education in a difficult area like Nam Vi, the teaching staff and the Board of Directors have continuously researched and developed teaching plans that are close to reality, promoting students’ abilities through experiential activities, integrating life skills, ethics, and social knowledge. The most important thing is not only the facilities, but also the dedication and innovation of the teaching staff,” Ms. Dong Thi Thuy emphasized.

Without being too ostentatious, these quiet but persistent changes are contributing to improving the quality of education, making Nam Vi commune a bright spot in education in Muong Nhe district. The school pays special attention to applying information technology in teaching, making the most of available equipment to help students understand lessons more easily and love school more. “We do not teach according to a set model. Each lesson is a journey of enlightenment, closely linked to the students’ lives,” Ms. Thuy confided.

More importantly, the journey is not only the effort of teachers and students, but also the support of parents and the community. The school has cleverly connected with parents through extracurricular activities, discussing solutions to help their children progress. Despite the difficult life, many Mong, Dao, and Ha Nhi families are still willing to encourage and support their children to attend class every day.

The lessons have become an experience of learning about knowledge for both teachers and students.

The results of those efforts are not only reflected in numbers or awards, but more importantly, in the students’ daily growth. They are more courageous, know how to say thank you, know how to give in to their friends and dream beyond the mountain top. One student once told her teacher: “When I grow up, I will become a teacher to teach children like me now.” Ms. Thuy confided.

Today’s highland schools are not only places to teach, but also places to preserve the future. Nam Vi Primary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities is a living proof of that./.
