In 1989, immediately after the re-establishment of Quang Tri province, the Departmentof Education and Training (DoET) decided to establish a specialized system under Dong Ha High School. The provincial high school for the gifted (now Le Quy Don High School for the Gifted) was officially established on the basis of merging the provincial secondary specialized block and specialized classes of Dong Ha High School according to Decision No. 674/QD-UB dated April 25, 1994 of the Provincial People's Committee.
Over 30 years of construction and development, Le Quy Don High School for the Gifted has always played a key role in discovering, training and nurturing gifted and excellent students; it is a training facility for talented and high-quality human resources for the province. Up to now, the school has been invested in construction with a spacious campus, spacious, modern and convenient facilities with a high-quality, dedicated and responsible team. In the 2024 - 2025 school year, the school has 823 students, 95 teachers, of which 100% of teachers meet the standards, 60% are above the standards (including 1 doctorate, 56 masters).

From the 1994-1995 school year to present, students of Le Quy Don High School for the Gifted have won over 550 prizes in national cultural competitions for excellent students. Notably, in the 2023-2024 school year, the school won 40 out of 44 national cultural awards, the highest number of awards ever with 1 first prize, 5 second prizes, 19 third prizes, and 15 consolation prizes.
In addition to improving the quality of key education, the school always focuses on the quality of comprehensive education. Every year, 100% of students graduate from high school, the rate of students passing university entrance exams is over 98%, many of whom are valedictorians, passing the entrance exams to top universities in the country and internationally.
In recognition of its contributions to the education cause, Le Quy Don High School for the Gifted has been awarded many noble titles by the Party and the State: Third-class Labor Medal (2003), Second-class Labor Medal (2009) and First-class Labor Medal (2014), many "Excellent Emulation Unit" flags from the Prime Minister and many other noble awards.
