From a Disney-loving girl to… “Miss Universe 2024” interpreter

Nguyen Ta Tra Lam (third year, Marketing major, University of Economics , Ho Chi Minh City) is a young but talented female interpreter. Tra Lam had the opportunity to be an interpreter at 'Miss Universe 2024' when she was only 20 years old.

As a former English major student, participating in many English Excellent Student competitions at the provincial and national levels and achieving 8.0 IELTS in grade 12, Tra Lam is not only an excellent student but she also proves her ability on the international beauty playground through her experience as an interpreter.

Chance to Miss Universe

Sharing about her chance to join Miss Universe, Tra Lam said that it was a very lucky opportunity that she never thought she would have. Thanks to her solid English foundation, plus her job as an English teacher at Power English, a sponsor of Miss Universe, Tra Lam was invited to be one of two interpreters for 'Miss Universe' when this unit returned to Vietnam and organized a press tour.

Within the framework of the program, she had the opportunity to work directly with Miss Continent 2024, the reigning 'Miss Universe 2024' and 'Mister World 2019'. She accompanied and interpreted directly at the conversations and professional exchanges between the Organizing Committee and the international Misses. At the same time, Tra Lam also "took the opportunity" to share about Vietnamese culture, from music to cuisine to create a connection between the beauty queens and Vietnam.

A working day for Tra Lam at Miss Universe 2024 is vibrant and full of challenges. She starts very early, at 6-7am, and works continuously until late at night. “Everyone at 'Miss Universe' works very fast, moves very quickly. Although we have planned the day before, there are still many things that arise, requiring me to always be ready to improvise,” Tra Lam shared.

Her most memorable moment was when she stood backstage at Aquafina Fashion Week. “That was the first time I actually participated in a large-scale event, supporting the beauty queens preparing to go on stage. Everyone was very friendly and lovely,” Tra Lam excitedly recalled.

However, the work is not always smooth. Tra Lam shared that the biggest difficulty is ensuring time, especially when having to interpret for many parties at the same time. “However, I feel that my performance at 'Miss Universe 2024' is quite good. If I were to rate it on a scale of 10, I would probably give it about 8.5 or 9,” ​​she shared modestly.

Journey to conquer English

Tra Lam started learning English at a very young age, with a passion for Disney movies. “I often imitated the characters in the movies even though I didn’t understand anything, and that was the motivation for me to pursue English,” she shared. It was this passion that motivated her to constantly learn and improve her foreign language skills.

Tra Lam's path to success was not easy. She had to go through many difficulties and challenges. To achieve awards and an IELTS score of 8.0 while still in high school, Tra Lam spent a lot of time studying. She shared: "I often wake up early to study, take advantage of every moment to read books, listen to music and watch movies in English. There were times when I felt tired and wanted to give up, but thanks to my passion, I overcame everything."

Besides her excellent foreign language skills, Tra Lam also has many other talents such as reading Tarot. She shared that learning about Tarot helps her understand herself and the people around her better.

With what she has achieved, Nguyen Ta Tra Lam is not only an exemplary student but also a passionate young person. She believes that every effort and constant endeavor of hers is valuable and can make a big difference.

“Follow your passion and never give up. Success doesn’t come easily, but if we persevere and work hard, we will achieve what we want,” Tra Lam confided.
