On May 26, Quang Nam Regional General Hospital received and treated a special case, causing the medical team to be very worried.
Female patient TTTh. (88 years old), residing in Dien An ward, Dien Ban town, Quang Nam province, was hospitalized in a weak condition, with many underlying diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes and electrolyte disturbances.

When admitted to the hospital, Mr. Th. had a large tumor in his upper lip, ulcerated, bleeding, and many parasitic maggots inside.
According to his medical history, three years ago, he discovered a small mole on his face but did not monitor or treat it. The mole later developed into a malignant tumor, causing prolonged ulcers, bleeding, and severe pain. Only when the ulcer became severely infected and maggots appeared did his family take him to the hospital.
Initial diagnosis showed that the patient had advanced skin cancer of the lip area, suspected basal cell carcinoma, complicated by infection of necrotic tissue and maggots.
After interdisciplinary consultation, the doctors decided to perform surgery to remove the parasite nest, control infection, bleeding and reduce pain for the patient.
The surgery removed the tumor widely, completely cleaned the maggot nest, stopped the bleeding and created a cosmetic flap to close the wound.

Three days after surgery, the patient’s pain was significantly reduced, the surgical wound was dry, and there was no infection. The old lady was able to eat and do light activities again. The patient is expected to be discharged on May 30.
Dr. Duong Thi Hoang Phung, Department of Dentistry and Maxillofacial Surgery at the hospital, said that this is a warning bell not to be subjective with seemingly small signs on the body. A seemingly harmless mole can be the beginning of cancer if not detected and treated promptly.
"People need to pay attention to skin lesions that take a long time to heal, especially in the elderly. Do not ignore symptoms such as prolonged ulcers, discharge, and unexplained pain. Most importantly, pay more attention to parents and grandparents, who sometimes do not know how to express their pain," Dr. Phung shared.
