BDK - In recent times, Tuong Da commune (Chau Thanh) has had positive changes in the work of preventing black-headed caterpillar (BCH). Farmers in Tuong Da commune focus on releasing parasitic wasps in coconut gardens.

Tuong Da commune was established based on the merger of three communes: An Hiep, Son Hoa and Tuong Da. The whole commune has over 30 hectares of coconut trees infected with SDĐ. Of these, more than 20 hectares are in the recovery stage. From February 2025 to now, the commune has not recorded any new infected coconut gardens. This is the result of the proactiveness of the people in prevention, as well as the synchronous and effective measures implemented by the locality.

To achieve the above encouraging results, the Farmers' Association of Tuong Da commune has played a key role in disseminating and instructing farmers on methods of pest control. The three main methods deployed are: mechanical treatment, biological treatment and releasing parasitic wasps. According to the process, gardeners will carry out the above three stages in turn to achieve high efficiency in pest control. People are instructed on how to recognize early signs of coconut being attacked by pests through regular garden visits. When detecting damaged leaves, people will release parasitic wasps according to the correct technique and use appropriate biological drugs to kill pests without affecting the bee colony.

Thanks to the correct application of techniques, households have gradually become more proactive in preventing and treating SDĐ. The support of knowledge and skills from the Commune Farmers' Association has brought many positive signals, helping people not only protect their coconut gardens effectively but also feel secure in production. Many households said that thanks to the support of the government and the Commune Farmers' Association, they are more confident and no longer worried about the risk of pest outbreaks as before.

Mr. Nguyen Minh Dung, 64 years old, residing in Binh An hamlet, Tuong Da commune, shared: “In the past, when SDĐ first appeared, I and many households were very worried because we did not know how to handle it. But thanks to the Commune Farmers' Association organizing training sessions, giving specific instructions step by step, from how to recognize signs of pests to prevention methods using biological drugs, I have learned how to take care of and monitor the coconut garden properly. Up to now, my coconut garden has grown well, no longer affected by pests like before. The important thing is that we have received timely support so we are no longer passive like in the early days of the outbreak.”

Currently, although the situation of land-based pests is basically under control, the Commune Farmers' Association still maintains warnings and recommends that people not be subjective and continue to take good preventive measures. Because land-based pests are dangerous pests, with the potential to recur and spread if not closely monitored.

According to the Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Tuong Da Commune, Nguyen Bang Giang, at present, the situation of worm infestation in the area is basically under control, but the risk of recurrence is always latent, especially when weather conditions are favorable for the development of worms. "We always remind people not to be subjective. Checking coconut gardens needs to be done regularly, especially when the trees have young leaves - the time when worm infestation is most likely to attack. In addition, people need to continue to take preventive measures such as collecting and destroying coconut leaves infested with pests, using the right type of recommended pesticides and ensuring that pesticides are sprayed at the right time and with the right technique to achieve the highest efficiency", emphasized the Chairman of the Farmers' Association of the Commune, Nguyen Bang Giang.

Proactively preventing and controlling coconut leafhoppers is an important step, gradually building Tuong Da commune into a safe coconut material area, contributing to stabilizing people's income and developing the agricultural economy .
