The aforementioned victory against Thailand took place in the group stage of the men's quadrant event at the 2026 Sepak Takraw World Cup. The tournament was held from May 16 to 23 in Malaysia.
In this event, Vietnam is in the same group as Thailand, Indonesia, and Japan. This is considered a very tough group as all four teams are highly skilled, especially Thailand - the dominant nation in sepak takraw.
In their opening match, the Vietnamese men's four-person team staged an impressive comeback victory against Japan with a score of 2-1 (6-15, 15-10, and 15-11). It's worth noting that Japan had previously defeated Vietnam in last year's World Cup.
In the second set, Vietnam once again staged a spectacular comeback against Thailand. After losing the first set 8-15, the players coached by Nguyen Trong Thuy won the next two sets with scores of 17-15 and 15-10.
All four athletes, Vuong Minh Chau, Nguyen Van Ly, Dau Van Hoang, and Huynh Ngoc Sang, performed excellently in this match, bringing a memorable victory to their team.
Despite winning their first two matches, Vietnam could theoretically still be eliminated if they lose to Indonesia in the final match and Thailand wins against Japan. To secure a place in the quarterfinals, Vietnam needs one more strong performance.

In the three-person (regu) event, Vietnam is in the same group as Myanmar, China, and Indonesia. The team had a smooth start, winning against Indonesia 2-0.
At this year's World Cup, the Vietnamese sepak takraw team is expected to win at least one gold medal. Although this is a sport dominated by Thailand, Vietnam has often surprised in major tournaments in recent years, in both men's and women's events.
In the 2025 World Championships final, the Vietnamese women's four-person team spectacularly defeated Thailand to claim the championship title.
