Started in 2011 and completed in 2013, the Trans-Asia route is nearly 26km long, with a 12m wide roadbed, with a total investment of more than 850 billion VND from government bonds. This is a vital traffic axis serving the economic development needs of the northern region of Quang Binh province, while reducing the load on National Highway 1 and National Highway 12A.
However, after more than 10 years of use and many repairs, the road surface has now seriously degraded. Many sections are covered with potholes, uneven surfaces, and subsidence, making it very difficult for people and vehicles to travel.
Heavy trucks frequently passing by are also one of the reasons why the road surface quickly deteriorates. |
Mr. Le Hoang, from Quang Phu commune (Quang Trach), who often travels on the road, said that many sections of the road have deteriorated, making it difficult to travel, especially for motorcyclists. If you are not careful, it is easy to lose control due to potholes.
According to records, the most seriously degraded sections of the road are through Quang Thach and Quang Tien communes (Quang Trach), with a high risk of traffic accidents. In fact, there have been many accidents and collisions on this section of the road, the main cause of which is the degraded road surface.
Mr. Phan Dung, another local resident, said that since the road was put into use, there have been many accidents. Especially in recent years, accidents have been continuous, with some minor injuries and some serious deaths.
According to Mr. Dung, due to the damaged road surface and lack of lighting system, driving at night becomes more difficult, just a little carelessness can lead to danger. He himself once fell off his motorbike, but because he was familiar with the road and was moving at a slow speed, he only suffered minor injuries.
According to local residents, one of the main causes of the damage is the large volume of heavy trucks. Under the weight of dozens of tons, many newly paved asphalt sections quickly peeled off and cracked after only a short time. In particular, during the recent implementation of the North-South Expressway project through the area, hundreds of dump trucks and construction material trucks roared through every day, “shredding” the already damaged road surface.
Not only is the section through Quang Thach commune in disrepair, there are also many unfinished construction sites. The road surface has been dug up but not completed, mud and soil spill onto the road causing danger, especially when it rains, the road surface is slippery and visibility is limited. Notably, the section through village 9, Quang Thach commune still has about 100m of unfinished construction, the road surface has formed deep holes that are very dangerous and many accidents have occurred here.
Chairman of Quang Thach Commune People's Committee Phan Duy An said that this is a particularly important road, not only serving the socio-economic development of the locality, but also connecting communes in the area with National Highway 1 and National Highway 12A, while ensuring national defense and security tasks. However, the road is currently severely degraded, causing serious safety concerns. In particular, there is still about 100m of unfinished and unfinished construction, causing many locations of the road surface to peel, concave and convex, with deep depressions, causing great difficulties for the people.
“The local government hopes that the authorities will promptly inspect and re-evaluate the entire route and promptly implement a repair plan. It is necessary to take remedial measures soon to ensure the safety of the people, avoid prolonging the situation, causing accidents and wasting previously invested resources,” Mr. An added.
