University Admissions 2025: A series of incidents after the announcement of benchmark scores

Not only did people anxiously wait for the admission results for many days, this year's university admissions also encountered many problems that almost caused hundreds of candidates to fail the university entrance exam despite having exam results higher than the standard score.

DIFFICULTIES IN LOOKUP ADMISSION RESULTS

After the schools announced the admission results (on the evening of August 22 and the morning of August 23), candidates encountered many difficulties when looking up the admission results online as well as completing the online admission confirmation procedures. Throughout the day of August 24, many candidates reported that they could not access the common system of the Ministry of Education and Training.

According to Thanh Nien Newspaper, because many universities have not yet uploaded data to the system (list of candidates eligible for admission), the Ministry of Education and Training has temporarily closed the portal. However, in previous years, when there was a problem or a need to extend the time for a certain step in the admission process, the Ministry of Education and Training would publicly announce it to candidates. But this year, there was absolutely no public information from the Ministry, making candidates think that the Ministry's system was overloaded. Late in the morning of August 25, candidates were able to access the system again to look up results and confirm online admission.

HUNDREDS OF DOCTORS ALMOST FAIL

After universities announced the first round of admission scores, many admission incidents continuously occurred at the schools, causing hundreds of candidates to almost fail unfairly.

In the north, there is the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Vietnam National University, Hanoi), which made a mistake when announcing the components of an admission combination, causing many candidates to fail the exam (later the school corrected it, but many candidates said they did not know about the correction). The wrongly announced component was D66, initially including the subjects of literature, English, and civic education; later corrected to include the subjects of literature, English, and economic and legal education. Regarding this, the school admitted its mistake and handled the matter by accepting admission to both D66 combinations.

Also at this school, on August 24, the school announced the secondary criteria for all 28 major codes, while the school announced the benchmark score from the evening of August 22. For example, the journalism major has a C00 benchmark of 28.2, the secondary criteria is to consider candidates with a wish (NV) 4 or higher, candidate A even though he got 28.2 C00 points but set the journalism major code of this school as NV5, he still failed.

Another situation that also affected many students occurred at the Banking University of Ho Chi Minh City. After the school announced the admission scores, many students who applied for the law and economic law majors had higher scores than the admission scores but did not receive admission notices. According to the feedback, the school initially announced that one of the conditions for admission to the law major was that the subject combinations including math and literature, or math or literature, must achieve a minimum of 6 points or more on a 10-point scale. However, the school later adjusted the conditions, requiring students to achieve a minimum of 6 points in both literature and math to be eligible for admission to these majors. This caused students who applied for admission to combinations that only included literature and no math to still need to achieve 6 points or more in math to be eligible for admission. Students who applied for combinations that did not include math but did not achieve 6 points or more in this subject, even though their exam scores for 3 subjects were higher than the school's announced admission score, were still not admitted.

On the morning of August 26, Ho Chi Minh City Banking University issued a notice of settlement. Accordingly, candidates applying for admission to the school's law majors only need to meet the conditions as initially announced, that is, those applying for admission with a combination of only literature subjects do not need to achieve 6 points in math.

360 STUDENTS WITHOUT ENOUGH STANDARD SCORE STILL… REPORTED PASSING

On the contrary, hundreds of candidates who did not meet the standard score were still admitted to Ho Chi Minh City University of Education due to technical errors.

Reflecting to Thanh Nien , a parent said that their child registered for NV1 at Ho Chi Minh City University of Education. Looking up NV2 results at another school, it said they failed (meaning they passed NV1 - PV ). The family contacted Ho Chi Minh City University of Education and it said they were admitted to NV5 at Can Tho University. Meanwhile, looking up at Can Tho University and other schools all reported 100% of NVs failed even though the A00 block score was 25 points.

Another candidate also said that he had registered for 6 NVs, but when looking up the General Admission System of the Ministry of Education and Training, he only saw 5 NVs reported as failed and 1 NV with no content showing whether he failed or passed. This candidate said that initially, he looked up the results and reported that he passed NV5 to Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, but later he reported that he passed NV6 to Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education. However, currently on the system, the order of the 2 NVs is reversed and the NV5 admission results are still blank.

This situation was recorded to have occurred with 360 candidates who had applied for admission to Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, and also applied to 66 other universities. All cases did not meet the admission standards to Ho Chi Minh City University of Education but were not considered for admission to the next admissions to other universities, and were almost "kicked out" of the admission system.

Speaking to Thanh Nien reporters, a representative of Ho Chi Minh City University of Education said that on August 22, the school announced the admission scores. Immediately after that, the school reviewed the admission list and found that there were cases where candidates did not meet the admission scores but were on the admission list and vice versa. "Considering that this was a technical error and to ensure maximum benefits for candidates, the school has sent a dispatch to the Ministry of Education and Training to create conditions for candidates to continue the admission process and requested support from related universities," the school representative added.

A representative of Ho Chi Minh City University of Education said that they had worked with each university . By the afternoon of August 26, about 1/3 of the candidates had been processed to ensure admission to the next NV at another school where the candidates met the standard score requirements.

According to a source of Thanh Nien , currently some universities in the Northern admission group are still having to deal with a small problem related to the data standardization process.

WHAT IS THE CAUSE ?

Analyzing the above incidents, the Vice Principal of a University in Ho Chi Minh City said that the direct cause comes from the operations in the recruitment and processing of NV. However, the underlying cause comes from major changes in the recruitment method but is only prepared in a very short time in all stages, from the general recruitment on the software to the training process and adaptation of the training institutions themselves to these changes.

Another expert commented: "With what is happening this year, even those who are directly involved in the admissions process at universities are confused and do not know how to explain it to candidates." According to this expert, the problems in the admissions process this year stem from changes that no one fully anticipated the complexity of, especially in the general admissions method and the conversion of equivalent scores between methods.

"It seems that no one anticipated the complexity of the conversion, each school applied a different method and when the schools announced the admission scores, TS did not know whether they passed or failed. It was also the change in the admission method, the lack of early admission combined with the score conversion that caused the number of NV this year to increase sharply. The number of NV was too large, too many variables affected the virtual filtering process. After the virtual filtering, TS could not look up the results due to technical errors," this expert analyzed.

Ministry of Education and Training: All successful candidates will be notified promptly.

Yesterday afternoon, August 26, the Ministry of Education and Training issued a press release affirming that resolving enrollment errors is the responsibility of the schools.

According to the Ministry of Education and Training, in 2025, the total number of candidates registered for the exam will reach 852,000 with 7.6 million candidates in more than 4,000 majors and training programs of more than 400 universities and colleges.

The total number of actual employees who have to be recruited on the system is up to over 50 million, an increase of about 2 times compared to 2024. According to the Ministry of Education and Training, with such a large amount of data, along with the diverse admission methods and conditions of the schools, errors are inevitable, even at a very small rate.

As in previous years, these errors were mainly due to errors in the admission input data, some errors were due to manual operations by some schools during the admission process.

According to the admission regulations, the resolution of errors is the responsibility of the schools. If necessary, the Ministry of Education and Training will support, guide and direct other universities to coordinate the handling.

According to the Ministry of Education and Training, all cases of errors will be resolved promptly and in accordance with regulations. All candidates who meet the admission requirements will certainly be notified of their admission in time to enroll on time.
