University Admissions 2025: Candidates worry about fierce competition between methods

The university admission method in 2025 will basically remain stable compared to last year, but the elimination of early admission and conversion of admission scores, and the actual admission method will have many changes.

This makes candidates worry about fluctuations in the level of competition and benchmark scores between methods.

Concerns about the new selection process

According to the university and college admission guidelines issued by the Ministry of Education and Training, this year all candidates (including candidates admitted directly) must register for admission online, submitting all admission wishes to the Ministry of Education and Training's General Admission Support System. From July 16 to 5:00 p.m. on July 28, candidates can register, adjust, and add their wishes an unlimited number of times. Candidates' wishes to all schools registered by major/program are ranked from 1 to the end. These wishes will be processed on the system and each candidate will only be admitted to the highest wish among the registered wishes.

Candidates only register for admission by major, which means they do not select the admission method and combination. Therefore, schools that use many methods and combinations for admission, the software must consider all methods and combinations for candidates according to the announced admission information. At the same time, schools that use many combinations and methods for a major/group of majors at the same time for admission must determine and announce the conversion rules equivalent to the input threshold and admission score, and the conditions for receiving application documents.

Thus, compared to last year, the admission process has important changes: no more early admission but simultaneous consideration of common methods; equivalent conversion of input threshold and admission score in cases of using multiple combinations and methods for one major. Faced with these new points, TS expressed concern when participating in this year's admission.

Sharing with Thanh Nien Newspaper reporter, a candidate expressed concern and worry about whether the simultaneous admission methods and equivalent score conversion will reduce the advantage of admission methods other than high school graduation exam scores. This concern is also the reason why some candidates who scored 800 - nearly 1,000/1,200 points on the Ho Chi Minh City National University's capacity assessment test in the first round still participated in the second round even though the results were equivalent to the admission standard score in 2024 for the desired major.

Dr. Minh Kh. (Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted, Ho Chi Minh City) wants to apply for the Biotechnology major at the University of Natural Sciences (Ho Chi Minh City National University). This Dr. said that he achieved 884 points in the first round of the exam - higher than the standard score for this major last year (835/1,200 points). However, with the context of this year's admission, this Dr. wants to improve the exam to 900 points to be safer. For the same reason, Dr. Phuong Nh. (Practical High School - Ho Chi Minh City University of Education) took the second round of the competency assessment exam even though he achieved nearly 1,000 points in the first round of the exam. Explaining the reason for retaking the exam, Phuong Nh. said: "I have an admissions officer for the University of Information Technology (Ho Chi Minh City National University), which is a major with high admission scores compared to the general level. More importantly, with the innovations in the admissions method this year, the joint admissions and the conversion of the score scale to 30, I am afraid that the admission scores will be stricter."

N ADMISSION PRINCIPLES TO ENSURE EXCELLENT STUDENTS ARE ADMISSED

Representatives of universities expressed their views on the concerns of Dr. Pham Tan Ha, admissions and training advisor of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Ho Chi Minh City National University), said: "Dr. is right to be worried because the new admission method will have more or less impact on admission. However, when implementing equivalent score conversion and admission procedures, universities still follow the principle that good candidates are guaranteed admission regardless of the method."

Regarding the method of considering the scores of the Ho Chi Minh City National University's competency assessment exam, Dr. Ha said that for the past two years, member schools of Ho Chi Minh City National University have been running data to compare the academic results of students admitted by this method with the results of the high school graduation exam and university study results. "Statistics show that students admitted by competency exam scores have similar results to the high school graduation exam, and at the same time have better academic results than those admitted by other methods. Therefore, students should not worry about the level of competition between these two admission methods," Dr. Ha added.

Master Cu Xuan Tien, Head of Admissions and Student Affairs Department of the University of Economics and Law (Ho Chi Minh City National University), also predicted: "The change in admission methods will not have much impact on the admission of PhDs. The greater impact and pressure will be on universities and colleges". However, Master Tien noted that PhDs should not be subjective, and need to closely monitor the admission information of the schools they are interested in. In particular, pay close attention to information such as admission combinations, score conversion methods, especially the requirements for proof of admission documents in the admission methods announced by the school.

To achieve the best results in this year's admission, candidates need to achieve the best results in the high school graduation exam.

Master Nguyen Thi Xuan Dung, Director of Communications at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, also said that this year's admission regulations have some changes in the admission methods such as implementing a common admission round, not dividing the quota for each method, and converting the common score scale. These adjustments are very significant in creating a unified assessment level, ensuring fairness among candidates, regardless of the method of admission. "All candidates are included in the same reference system, all methods are implemented equally, so whether candidates choose to be considered based on their academic records, high school graduation exam scores, competency assessment scores, or other methods, they have the same opportunity. At the same time, this change also increases the level of competition among candidates," Master Dung assessed.

That is why, according to Master Dung, students need to be more proactive to improve their chances of being admitted to the desired major and school by researching information and preparing carefully for registration. Along with investing in studying and reviewing, students must also spend time on placing and arranging recruitment applications intelligently to increase their chances of being admitted.

Sharing the same opinion, Master Cu Xuan Tien advised: "To achieve the best results in this year's admission, candidates need to achieve the best results in the high school graduation exam; follow the admission information of the schools to arrange the order of NV scientifically. Candidates should not register too little and need to divide into groups to increase the chances of being admitted to the major they love."

Universities still "hold the power" over admissions

The guidelines for university and college admissions issued by the Ministry of Education and Training clearly state the admission process this year. Accordingly, the admission processing system only filters out candidates who have passed higher NV admissions to other training institutions from the expected admission list that the training institutions send to the system, and does not have the function of adjusting the quotas and benchmarks that the training institutions have determined. The system does not conduct admissions on behalf of universities and colleges.

The official list of admitted candidates to schools is the list sent back to schools by the admission processing system (based on the list of expected admitted candidates uploaded by the school to the system) after processing the candidates for the last time.

Thus, although the admission is conducted in a common round on the general admission support system of the Ministry of Education and Training, the right to actively consider admission still belongs to the universities based on regulations, actual candidate database, and admission conditions of each school.
