At the time of update, the EUR/USD exchange rate reached 1.1385, up 0.21%, but still not strong enough to surpass the important psychological threshold of 1.14.
Price action suggests investor sentiment is somewhat cautious, especially as the EUR/USD pair appears to have entered overbought territory.
The euro benefited from a weaker dollar as investors continued to worry about unpredictable trade policies from the U.S. In particular, the decision to impose new tariffs on Chinese cargo ships calling at U.S. ports is escalating trade tensions that could impact global supply chains.
In addition, the news that attracted attention this week was that President Trump is said to be considering the possibility of firing Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell. Although the market has not reacted strongly to this news, concerns about the independence of the Fed continue to be a factor that puts pressure on the USD. The DXY index, which measures the strength of the USD against 6 major currencies, is currently down 0.09% to 99.31.
On the European side, European Central Bank (ECB) Governing Council member Madis Muller said that falling energy prices and easing tariffs had supported recent interest rate cuts. He also stressed that key economic indicators were showing signs of improvement, although he warned of inflation risks if the EU economy continued to become more fragmented in the future.
