World market developments
The US Dollar Index (DXY) measures the greenback's movements against six major currencies (EUR, JPY, GBP, CAD, SEK, CHF) at 98.05.
The US dollar rose after Bloomberg reported that US Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller is emerging as a leading candidate for Fed chairman in President Donald Trump's team.
Bloomberg said Mr. Waller has met with members of Mr. Trump's team — who were impressed with him — although he has not met the President in person.
However, Mr. Waller is highly regarded in the financial community and central banks and his appointment would be a positive signal for the USD.
Waller is seen as dovish, but has the credibility to keep long-term interest rates steady and is a strong supporter of capital flows into the dollar, said Karl Schamotta, chief market strategist at Corpay in Toronto.
Against the Japanese Yen, the USD increased 0.1% to 147.49.
The British pound rose after a higher-than-expected number of policymakers at the Bank of England (BoE) voted to keep interest rates on hold, despite the bank cutting rates by 25 basis points as expected.
Four of the nine BoE members voted to keep interest rates unchanged amid concerns about high inflation, suggesting the BoE's rate-cutting cycle may be coming to an end. The pound ended the session up 0.41% at $1.341.
Meanwhile, the EUR fell 0.27% to $1.1627. The EUR is likely to continue to be supported against the USD, due to the relatively more “hawkish” policy from the European Central Bank (ECB).
Against the Swiss franc, the USD rose 0.16% to 0.808.
