USD exchange rate increase affects Vietnam iPhone market

Since early April, US President Donald Trump’s decision to increase import taxes has had many impacts on the market in general. International experts say Apple is among the businesses most heavily affected by the new US tariff policy. This could disrupt the iPhone market as well as many other Apple products and cause price fluctuations to offset the increased import costs.

The market for hand-carried iPhones is "anxiously" waiting.

In Vietnam, the market for hand-carried iPhones mainly uses products originating from the US (code LL/A), so users are somewhat worried that recent tariff fluctuations may affect the supply and price of the device. However, many stores said that at present, the price of hand-carried iPhones (both new and used) has not changed.

Because of Trump's tariffs, will iPhones exceed 60 million VND?

Accordingly, the reference price of used models such as iPhone 14 Pro series and 15 Pro series still fluctuates from over 14 to over 20 million VND, which is considered "stable" compared to the time before the announcement of the new corresponding tax rate. Regular iPhone versions (not the Pro line) are still in the range of 7 - 10 million VND depending on the model and memory version.

The new iPhone 16 Pro Max, the standard 256 GB version imported from the US, is being offered from 27.3 million VND, while the iPhone 16 Pro 256 GB has a reference price of 25.9 million VND. Used but still new products will be about 1.5 to 2 million VND lower depending on the type. These prices have remained the same since March.

A representative of a business store said that the supply has not changed in quantity so far, and the price cannot be called fluctuating compared to last month, when there is no information about tax increase. However, all parties are closely monitoring the iPhone market to be able to promptly come up with appropriate solutions to deal with the situation.

Building multiple scenarios for the genuine iPhone market

In the official business segment, major systems also said they have not received any notice from Apple regarding changes in import price policy or equipment supply. Talking to Thanh Nien , Mr. Nguyen The Kha, Commercial Director at FPT Shop system, said that at this time and in the short term, the iPhone market in Vietnam will not have any changes in import price and supply, and there has been no notice of change from Apple to dealers because the iPhone import policy into Vietnam remains the same.

"Although this has not had a direct impact, it could have an indirect impact if there is a major change in the USD exchange rate, so we have prepared flexible scenarios suitable for market fluctuations. But I think the main impact will be on consumer psychology, which means a possible decrease in demand," said Mr. Kha.

At the same time, Mr. Nguyen Lac Huy - media representative of the CellphoneS system confirmed that there is no information about price changes or impacts on the iPhone market or other Apple products in Vietnam at this time.

But a potential factor affecting the market is that the exchange rate has increased from 25,500 VND/USD to 26,000 VND/USD, at one point peaking at 26,100 VND/USD and is expected to continue to increase in the coming time, not only affecting Apple devices, technology products but also many other items.

Mr. Huy said: "The second and third quarters of 2024 also witnessed price increases for iPhone 13, 14, and 15 series products due to sharp increases in exchange rates. Therefore, there is reason to believe that in the coming time, iPhone prices will tend to increase." Like FPT Shop, this system has developed plans to ensure business operations to maintain stable growth targets, according to plan in 2025.
