Innovation for development

At the Hanoi International Tourism Fair - VITM Hanoi 2025 (taking place from April 10 to 13), for the first time, the Vietnam Tourism Association cooperated with VietSolutions Group to design the TechZone booth, displaying 20 advanced technology solutions including: AI, Robotic, Smart Hotel... creating a technology experience journey for visitors. This is also the first time that 14 large domestic and foreign technology companies have joined hands to create a "Technology Map of Vietnam's Tourism Industry". During the fair, 14 topics on AI, Robotic, Smart Hotel applications... were shared in the TechTalk section, right at the TechZone booth. The public witnessed robots serving in tourism activities and AI application solutions in tourism were widely introduced.

Chairman of the Vietnam Tourism Association Vu The Binh said that digital transformation is an important task for the tourism industry. For tourism to develop sustainably, in addition to human resources, the use of technology and AI plays an important role. “ Digital technology and artificial intelligence are now popular in life, something as simple as ChatGPT has been used by many people. Therefore, tourism businesses need to innovate in applying technology, especially using AI in building and managing products,” said Mr. Vu The Binh.

In fact, some Vietnamese tourism businesses are making efforts to adapt, innovate, and apply technology. For example, Hanoi Tourism Corporation introduced a robot model to serve in hotels. BestPrice Travel Company introduced the technology solution “AI Assistant for Tourism”.

Marketing Director of BestPrice Travel Bui Thanh Tu said that the company has applied AI to provide information according to tourists' requests in the form of a travel assistant. The AI assistant will replace part of the work of the customer support consultant team, helping to save manpower, respond quickly, save costs, and improve customer satisfaction... "Customers increasingly tend to book private tours and personalize services. With just one command, the AI assistant can give customers an answer in a short time, even immediately. Applying AI helps us save time and manpower when contacting customers," Mr. Bui Thanh Tu shared.

Building a smart tourism ecosystem

The requirement for digital transformation and technology application in tourism activities has been raised for many years but is still a new issue for many businesses. General Director of Flamingo Redtour Tourism Company Nguyen Cong Hoan said that many businesses have applied technology in communication and promotion, customer contact, but updating technology trends is still at a certain level. Recently, Robotic technology combined with AI has been gradually applied in restaurants and hotels. General Director of Trang An Travel Company Nguyen Huu Cuong also said that the unit has applied AI in some customer care activities, but is in the initial testing stage.

Assessing the process of digital transformation in tourism activities, Chairman of the Vietnam Tourism Association Vu The Binh said that tourism businesses are still slow to apply artificial intelligence. Vice Chairman of the UNESCO Travel Club, Director of MTV Vietnam Travel Doan Ngoc Tung commented that most tourism businesses have only applied AI in certain activities such as marketing and customer care, and have not applied it to management processes and product development. The shortage of AI experts is also a difficulty for units in digital transformation.

According to experts, in the future, AI and robots will become an indispensable part of many industries. The 2024 report of McKinsey & Company - one of the world's leading and most prestigious digital transformation consulting firms - shows that 78% of businesses worldwide have applied AI to at least one business function, of which 71% have integrated Generative AI to optimize processes, reduce costs and improve work efficiency.

McKinsey & Company Vietnam Manager Bruce Delteil assessed that AI will prove to be a powerful tool to promote innovation in the tourism industry. Therefore, tourism businesses need to quickly realize the great opportunities that AI brings and quickly implement strategic steps. If they are slow, they risk being left behind in the digital transformation race.

Recognizing the importance of digital transformation in building a smart tourism ecosystem, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has created an important legal corridor, including approving and promulgating the Tourism Industry Database System Project; Project on applying technology of Industry 4.0 to develop smart tourism... To effectively apply technology, Deputy Director of the National Tourism Administration Ha Van Sieu said that tourism businesses need to have a development strategy, invest in building a strong technology ecosystem, including infrastructure and training a team of employees with appropriate skills, to help apply AI and advanced technologies more effectively.
