Son La Province Sports Training and Competition Center is always bustling with the enthusiastic training atmosphere of athletes. However, what impressed us was that in the athletics training area, GARMIN smart watches are becoming familiar tools for athletes. Although the price is high, around 10 million VND/piece, athletes still invest in them to serve their regular training.
Athlete Lo Thi Thuy Trang said: During training, the GARMIN watch not only records each lap, speed, distance, but also analyzes heart rate, sleep, calories consumed and burned, and even tracks VO2 Max - an important measure of endurance. The data is synchronized, helping coaches monitor the level and adjust training plans to suit each athlete. Looking at the daily speed and heart rate charts, I know my training progress and set new goals for myself. The watch also provides suitable exercises, helping me maximize my abilities.
Coach Tran Thang, of the provincial track and field team, shared: Previously, we had to manually record the indicators, the results of each exercise of the athletes depended a lot on experience. When applying smart watches with clear, accurate data after each exercise, the adjustment of the exercises of the coaches for the athletes becomes more accurate, effective, and promotes the capacity of each athlete.
Currently, the provincial athletics team has 19 athletes, including: 12 throwers; 7 intermediate runners in the distances of 600m, 800m, 5,000m and 10,000m. In 2024, Son La's athletics athletes made their mark when they won the bronze medal in javelin throw at the U18 Southeast Asian tournament. Notably, at the 2025 National Youth Athletics Championship held in Lai Chau , the Son La delegation won 10 medals, including: 4 gold medals, 5 silver medals and 1 bronze medal, ranking 8th out of 65 participating delegations. At the same time, many national records were broken, including the record for the women's mixed relay race in the distances of 1,200m - 400m - 800m - 1,200m and men's javelin throw.
In addition to the task of training high-performance athletes, the Center also presides over the organization of many professional sports tournaments in the province. The organization of tournaments, especially when drawing lots and scheduling competitions, has been modernized with competition management and operation software.
Mr. Nguyen Tri Viet, Head of Competition Organization Department, said: The unit has received the Pickleball draw and schedule software handed over by IGB Media Joint Stock Company. Online draw and automatic schedule not only help save time, ensure fairness and transparency, but also enhance professionalism in the organization. Competition results are updated quickly, easy to count and share for delegations, coaches and spectators to follow.
Mr. Ho Minh Son, Director of the Sports Training and Competition Center, said: The Center is encouraging staff, employees, and coaches to apply modern technology to training. At the same time, it is coordinating with IGB Media Joint Stock Company to research and apply artificial intelligence (AI) in training and competition organization. In particular, it aims to digitize athlete records; monitor and analyze the daily training process of each athlete, each team... The Center will continue to research, invest in more equipment, and expand the scope of application of smart devices to many other sports.
The application of technology in training and competition organization is an inevitable trend. When deployed synchronously, modern equipment and software help organize scientific and professional competitions; improve achievements, ensure health and safety for athletes.
