People of Quang Bach commune, Cho Don district harvest seedless persimmons.

To develop this specialty crop, Bac Kan province has implemented many scientific projects to enhance the value of the product. In particular, the project "Research on selecting parent trees and building a model for intensive cultivation of seedless persimmon varieties in Bac Kan province" and the project "Application of science and technology to develop seedless persimmon varieties of Bac Kan province" were implemented since 2007; the project "Building geographical indications of Bac Kan for seedless persimmon products of Bac Kan province" was implemented since 2009... Through programs applying scientific and technological advances to production, the area of seedless persimmons in the province has increased gradually over the years, and the quality of the fruit has been improved.

With the efforts of all levels and sectors in maintaining and developing seedless persimmon varieties, seedless persimmon products have become the first specialty fruit of the province to receive a certificate of geographical indication protection granted by the Department of Intellectual Property - Ministry of Science and Technology in 2010. In 2013, Bac Kan seedless persimmon products once again affirmed their position in the market when they were included in the list of 100 famous brands and trademarks voted by the Intellectual Property and Creativity Magazine - Vietnam Intellectual Property Association.

The brand has been built, Bac Kan seedless persimmons have gradually gained a foothold in the market. People are promoting the application of science and technology in production. To develop the area to meet consumer demand and increase product value, the province has planned seedless persimmons as a key crop in agricultural production in the period of 2010 - 2015, with a vision to 2020. Seeing the production value, people have boldly expanded the area. In the province, seedless persimmon production areas have been established in the communes of Quang Khe, Khang Ninh, Dia Linh, Ha Hieu (Ba Be); Quang Bach, Dong Lac, Ngoc Phai, Nam Cuong (Cho Don) ... Other localities have also strongly developed this crop.

During the development process, seedless persimmon trees have some pests and diseases that cause leaf and fruit loss. In 2020, the Provincial People's Committee approved the scientific project "Research on major pests and diseases and application of science and technology to build a model to improve the productivity and quality of Bac Kan seedless persimmon trees". During the research process, anthracnose was identified as the main disease, thereby proposing solutions to prevent and control pests and diseases to improve crop quality.

With many projects and scientific topics being implemented, seedless persimmons are gradually becoming a strong crop with high income, bringing economic efficiency to the people. Currently, the whole province has about 800 hectares of seedless persimmons, of which more than 460 hectares are being harvested. Ba Be district is the locality with the largest planting area in the province with 380 hectares, of which 143 hectares have been harvested and 20 hectares are grown according to the organic VietGap direction. With a large planting area, Ba Be district has currently focused on specialized planting, making this crop a mainstay, helping people to eliminate and reduce poverty.

Na Ri district is also a locality with potential to develop seedless persimmons because it has a large area of garden land, hills, climate, and soil suitable for the expansion of this crop. This is a fruit tree with high productivity, quality, economic value, and is easy to grow. In 2021, the district implemented the project "Application of science and technology to build a model of intensive cultivation and propagation of Na Ri LT-1 seedless persimmons in Na Ri district". The Institute of Vegetable and Fruit Research, the unit directly implementing grafting, providing seeds, transferring science and technology "hand-holding" to people to grow and care for LT-1 persimmons in Na Ri district. The district has determined that seedless persimmons will be the type of tree that the district focuses on developing according to the value chain linkage model. In the coming time, the district will simultaneously provide technical support, seedlings, and fertilizers with propaganda and mobilization for people to focus on developing this economically valuable crop.

In Cho Don district, Quang Bach commune is considered a seedless persimmon growing area, with a total area of 45 hectares for harvesting 25 hectares. The local agricultural sector is continuing to promote the construction of raw material areas associated with linkages and consumption of seedless persimmon products. The solution is to apply policies, increase the application of science and technology in the direction of organic, support connections and linkages with businesses and cooperatives in forming growing areas and linking consumption of agricultural products.

Along with the application of science and technology in production, improving product quality, the issue of expanding the consumption market is also being concerned by localities with strengths in growing persimmons in Bac Kan. The Department of Industry and Trade creates conditions for localities and cooperatives to participate in trade promotion programs, supporting the introduction of Bac Kan seedless persimmons to e-commerce platforms and social networking platforms to promote and consume products. Thanks to that, the value of seedless persimmon products is increasingly enhanced, known and chosen by consumers. In recent years, the price of Bac Kan seedless persimmons has fluctuated on average from 15,000 to 40,000 VND/kg depending on the type; with an output of about 2,200 tons per year, it has brought significant economic value to the people.

In the coming time, Bac Kan will continue to promote the application of science and technology in planting, caring for and preventing pests and diseases to increase the value of the province's specialty products, increase the value of products with recognized geographical indications, thereby promoting local economic development./.
