The T-80BV tank is known as the "flying tank" of the Russian army. |
“We have been serving together for about four months now,” said the crew commander of the 1st Guards Tank Corps of the Western Military District, nicknamed “Pyatyi,” according to Sputnik. “Our vehicle is the latest improved T-80 BVM, which, in principle, deserves to be called a marksman tank. In theory, simply put, it allows us to “shoot a bullet right through the ventilation hatch” at a distance of up to 5 km.”
A soldier nicknamed “Cap” added that this weapon is called a “flying tank” and it has proven its ability to operate well in battles in special military operation zones.
“This is a wonderful “car”, very fast, called “flying tank” because of the engine. The T-80 main battle tank was developed on the basis of the T-64A model. This version was put into operation in 1976. The main difference between the T-80 and other tanks of the Soviet line is that it uses a single gas turbine engine, that is why it is called “flying tank”, “Cap” soldier said.
The most modern improved version of this tank line is the T-80BVM, produced at Omsktransmash (a subsidiary of UVZ) through a deep modernization of the T-80BV (put into use since 1985).
The latest modified version installed the improved GTD-1250 engine with a capacity of 1250 horsepower.
The combat weight of the vehicle is 46 tons. Unlike other tanks of the same type that run on diesel engines, this vehicle can start at temperatures of minus 40 degrees Celsius and accelerate in a straight line up to 80 km/h.
The upgraded T-80BV/U tank is equipped with Relikt active explosive reactive armor developed by the NII Stali scientific research institute.
Relikt explosive reactive armor is based on the highly explosive sensitive element 4S23 which provides an optimal level of protection against modern armor-piercing ammunition developed in the West.
The upgraded T-80BV/U tank retains the 125mm 2A46M/2A46M-5 cannon that can fire a variety of armor-piercing shells as well as anti-tank guided missiles (ATGM).
