Tan My is a commune with a large area of rose growing in Van Lang district, with over 500 hectares, of which over 67 hectares are VietGAP roses. At this time, rose growers here are starting to prevent pests and diseases, fertilize and weed the rose trees.
Mr. Hoang Van Hau, Director of Na Mo Persimmon Production and Trading Cooperative, Tan My Commune, shared: Currently, the Cooperative has over 9 hectares of persimmons that are cared for according to VietGAP and organic standards. Accordingly, to prepare for the next crop, at this time, we have pruned old branches to create new canopies, cleared the garden, and cleared weeds to help the trees grow well and healthily. Focusing on caring for persimmon trees at this time is very important, and is one of the decisive factors in helping to increase productivity and fruit quality.
According to the experience of the people, when the persimmons have turned yellow and the skin is shiny, they will be harvested - that is the time from August to mid-September (lunar calendar). Before that, the persimmon tree blooms in February and by April it starts to have small fruits. To have round, beautiful, sweet persimmons, people often focus on fertilizing from mid-May to June.
Similarly, many households growing roses in Hoang Viet commune are also busy pruning and fertilizing the new crop. Ms. Hoang Thi Thuy, Po Pheo village, Hoang Viet commune said: From mid-May to early June, rose trees are susceptible to pests and diseases such as mealybugs, leaf-eating worms, anthracnose, etc. Therefore, this is the time when we focus on prevention and control by using biological products sprayed periodically at moderate rates. My family also proactively pruned old branches, cleared weeds, and loosened the soil so that the trees can grow and develop better. At this time, the amount of water to irrigate the trees must reach 70% humidity so that the trees can grow well, with the lowest rate of pest and disease infection. Thanks to that, the trees can grow and produce even, beautiful fruit.
Not only the people in the two communes above, currently people in communes in the district such as Thanh Long, Hoang Van Thu, Hong Thai, Bac Hung ... are also taking care of the persimmon trees to prepare for the new crop. According to statistics from the professional department, currently, the whole district has over 1,300 hectares of persimmon trees, the harvested area is about 900 hectares, the cultivated area meets VietGAP and organic standards is over 320 hectares. The average fruit yield is about 8,000 - 10,000 tons/year.
Ms. Lo Thi Kim Oanh, Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Van Lang district, said: Persimmon is the main crop of the district. To ensure the good growth of the tree, the unit has implemented training activities and agricultural extension markets to disseminate to people about techniques for planting and caring for persimmon trees before and after harvest. On average, each year, the district's professional agencies organize from 5 to 6 training courses on techniques for planting and caring for persimmon trees, focusing on guiding people to grow persimmons according to VietGAP and organic standards to improve product quality and yield as well as limit pests and diseases, contributing to improving fruit yield and quality.
With the initiative of the people and the attention and support of the district's professional agencies, we believe that this year's persimmon season will be bountiful and achieve positive results. Thereby, contributing to increasing the value of specialty plants, increasing income for farmers, and gradually bringing the persimmon brand further.
