There are young people who choose to return to their hometowns to become civil servants, live with their parents, and then get married near home and feel at peace. This prospect is causing many young people who once wanted to stay in the city to rethink and somewhat waver in their previous choice.

It is undeniable that big cities bring many rich opportunities, dynamic and open working environments, plus many open social relationships. However, the development of the hometown, especially when considering family ties, many people have chosen to return to their hometown even though their income may decrease, opportunities are limited but they can still find stable jobs and many other reasons to stay.

Shaky intention to stay in the city
Ms. Hoang Thanh (27 years old, an office worker in Ho Chi Minh City) said that recently, every day when surfing the internet, she comes across many clips of young people sharing stories about leaving the city to return to the countryside. Looking at the images of these people with a peaceful life in their hometown, close to their parents, Thanh said she felt a little sad.
Suddenly, she looked back at her life of struggling in a foreign land for many years. The question suddenly appeared in her mind: "Am I working too hard every day? Did I make the wrong choice?". Working eight hours a day at the company, not counting overtime, Thanh then returned alone to the four walls of her rented room.
Thanh is from Quang Tri, so she can only visit her parents a few days a year during Tet. If she is lucky enough to have some extra money, she can come back for a few more days off. She had thought that after working for many years, she would find the right person, get married, and settle down in Ho Chi Minh City.
"But right now I'm a bit hesitant about this idea. If I have the chance, I might go back to my hometown because sometimes living here feels suffocating," Thanh laughed.
Studying her third year at university in Ho Chi Minh City, Huyen My never thought of finding a job in the city. Since she started studying, My has dreamed of returning to her hometown after graduation. She said that four years of university in a big city was enough to give her experience, so after graduating, she just wanted to return to her hometown and find a job close to home to live with her family.
My feels that job opportunities in the city are increasingly competitive, while the cost of living and rent are getting higher and higher. So if there is a suitable job in the countryside, "there is no reason to compete in the city".
"I believe that going back to my hometown still gives me the opportunity to develop myself the way I want, and also reduces traffic jams and dust, and I can breathe fresher air," My said.
Going back to the countryside is not necessarily boring.
Ms. Phuong Thao (23 years old), currently an English teacher at a secondary and high school in Thanh Hoa, said that life in the countryside is not as dull or boring as many people think. On the contrary, Thao shared that being with her family is a happy thing, although the decision to return to her hometown was probably the biggest shock of her life because it was never in her previous plans.
The Thanh girl said that she had originally intended to go back to her hometown to take the civil service exam to learn and gain experience because she had just graduated, but she did not expect to pass. So she went back! But after returning, she realized that everything in her hometown was much more developed and modern than she had imagined.
In Hanoi, Thao had a good income and a stable life, but in return she had to take care of everything by herself. Now, although her income is not as good, she can still do the job she loves and has time to take care of her parents.
"There's nothing happier than coming home after a tiring day at work and having a family meal with loved ones," Thao laughed.
Likewise, after graduating with a bachelor's degree in law, Ms. Huynh Hue (24 years old) immediately returned to her hometown in Phu Yen to take the civil service exam. She is currently working as an inspector in the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism. The biggest reason why Hue did not hesitate to return to her hometown was to be close to her parents.
"My parents are both over 60. I realized that I had little time left to spend with them, so since I was a student, I wanted to return to my hometown to work after finishing school," Hue confided.
Working for a government agency, the two days off on the weekends are when Hue spends more time with her parents and herself. She also learns guitar, bamboo flute and other skills that complement her professional work. Hue laughs when someone says "leaving the city to return to the countryside is the choice of the weak and afraid of conflict".
"I always support anyone who chooses to return to their hometown. You will have the opportunity to freely explore other aspects of life, maybe you will realize what you really want and determine your future direction," Hue said.
Choose to live the way you want
Mr. Van Canh (26 years old) said that as soon as he graduated from the teacher training school, he decided to return to his hometown Hung Yen to take the civil service exam. As a result, he passed the exam and became a literature teacher at a secondary school in his hometown.
But when he decided to leave Hanoi, teacher Canh faced fierce opposition from his family and relatives. For them, doing so would mean losing many opportunities for personal development in the bustling working environment of the capital. However, the young teacher thought differently, saying that "everyone has their own purpose in life."
Returning to his hometown, in addition to his professional work, Canh actively participates in many group activities and also devotes himself to preparing students for big and small competitions. "I feel like I am contributing to the career of educating people that any teacher would want to do, it's fun," Canh said excitedly.
