Dien Bien TV - In recent years, honey pineapples in Pu Lau village, Muong Nha commune, Dien Bien district have become famous in the market in the province and many northern provinces of our country. So what has contributed to making Pu Lau honey pineapples gain a foothold in the market and why is there a shortage of supply every pineapple season?

At this time, coming to Pu Lau village in the morning is a bustling scene of buying and selling honey pineapples. The special thing is that buying and selling honey pineapples from Pu Lau only takes place from early morning until around 13:00 every day, in the afternoon very few households go to the fields to cut pineapples to sell. On the other hand, people cut pineapples according to pre-orders, then sell them to traders who come to buy directly. Therefore, many people who come to buy suddenly often find it difficult to buy or have to buy from traders.

Currently, there are also traders who set up shacks in the village to buy pineapples from the people to resell to other sources. During the Pu Lau pineapple season, in addition to the people being able to sell pineapples with high income, many farmers in the communes and villages near Pu Lau also become traders with relatively good income thanks to the pineapple season.

According to the Pu Lau people, the honey pineapple variety was requested by them from the Lao villages bordering Vietnam to plant around 1990. Realizing that the seedlings were suitable for the climate and soil conditions, the people here gradually expanded the planting area. Pu Lau pineapple has the characteristics of large fruit, some of which can weigh 3 - 4 kg; the pineapple is very juicy and yellow like honey wax; the taste is rich and the fruit is very fragrant.

On average, Pu Lau village grows about 10 hectares of pineapple each year.

On the same hill, pineapple plants are tall, strong, and have big fruits, while rice or cassava plants are stunted, with low yield and productivity. Local people often say that the land of Pu Lau village is most suitable for growing pineapples. Scientifically , Pu Lau hill soil has many suitable conditions for growing honey pineapples.

Notably, the farming method of the local people here is natural, with little impact from chemicals, so the land over many years still retains its pure soil quality to be able to cultivate pineapples from year to year. The minimal use of chemicals to intervene in the cycle of planting and caring for pineapples has created a product that is safe for consumers. It is because of the natural farming method along with the quality of the fragrant, sweet fruit that is superior to pineapples from other places that Pu Lau pineapples have received the trust of consumers in and outside the province.

According to statistics, Pu Lau village currently has about 100 hectares of pineapple growing area. Pu Lau pineapple output this year is estimated at about 1 thousand tons, of which about 600 tons are ripe pineapples, the rest are green pineapples sold to companies from Hai Duong, Hung Yen, Hai Phong who come to buy directly in the village. Ripe pineapples are mainly cut by the people themselves and sold to small traders, green pineapples are purchased by Muong Nha Pineapple Cooperative to sell to small companies in the lowlands.

Pu Lau pineapple trees have brought a large source of income to more than 100 Mong ethnic households here.

In recent years, the Pu Lau pineapple "fever" has also caused people here to expand their growing area. On average, Pu Lau village increases about 10 hectares of pineapple each year. Pu Lau pineapples are large, sweet, juicy, and golden yellow like honey, and are no longer strange to consumers in and outside the province. Because they are grown naturally, Pu Lau pineapples ripen in many batches instead of mass ripening, not creating too much seasonal pressure like other crops. At the same time, when growing pineapples, Pu Lau people do not use pesticides to ensure the product is safe for consumers. These are the things that have helped Pu Lau pineapples always have a place in the market and every pineapple season is out of stock.

Pu Lau pineapple trees have brought a large source of income to more than 100 Mong ethnic households here. Thanks to that, the village has only one poor household due to disability, all households in the village have average income or above.

The local Party Committee and government are orienting to expand the pineapple tree to become a tree for hunger eradication and poverty reduction in the border commune of Muong Nha. Expanding the area in association with maintaining the brand, ensuring the quality and output of pineapple is an issue that needs special attention from the locality.
