According to regulations of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, from 2024, the city-level 12th grade excellent student exam will only be for students in grade 12, with academic performance and conduct in the first semester from Good or higher.
In particular, students in specialized classes are not allowed to take exams in the subjects they are studying, they can only register to take exams in other subjects. Students who are part of the excellent student team competing at the national level in January are also not allowed to take part in this exam.
This new regulation of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training is attracting public attention because it may cause loss of rights for students studying in specialized classes.
Nearly 5,000 12th grade students in Ho Chi Minh City will take part in the city-level exam to select excellent 12th grade students for the 2023-2024 school year.
Speaking to VOV2, Mr. Nguyen Bao Quoc, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, said that the city organizes two exams every year. The exam selects excellent students for the city's team to participate in the national exam in October 2023. In this exam, students take the exam in the subject they are studying.
The city-level exam for excellent students for the 2023-2024 school year was held on March 5. Students who are studying specialized subjects and meet the requirements and wish to continue taking the exam are still allowed to take the exam. However, these candidates are not allowed to take the exam in specialized subjects.
“This is to create more opportunities for students to study specialized subjects at high schools, not to reduce their opportunities. Students who study specialized subjects have already taken the specialized exam in October 2023. If they want to have more achievements, they can participate in subjects that are not specialized subjects,” said Mr. Quoc.
Mr. Quoc also clarified that in the October 2023 exam, all students studying specialized subjects must participate in this exam, on the one hand to evaluate the quality of training but at the same time to select students for the team to participate in the national excellent student exam.
Students who pass the team will still be ranked according to their results and will not lose their rights.
According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, in the city-level 12th grade excellent student selection exams in recent years, specialized students will have a greater advantage in specialized subjects due to the amount of specialized knowledge than non-specialized students. Therefore, the Department issued this regulation to ensure fairness between specialized and non-specialized school students.
On March 5, the exam to select excellent 12th grade students in Ho Chi Minh City for the 2023-2024 school year took place at 3 testing locations: Trung Vuong High School, Bui Thi Xuan High School and Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted with the participation of 4,730 12th grade students.
