Why is artificial intelligence a 'double-edged sword'?

Asia in the AI frenzy

The Asia- Pacific region is at the forefront of the AI revolution. The AI market size in the Asia-Pacific region currently stands at $22.1 billion and is expected to nearly quadruple by 2028 to $87.6 billion.

A recent study by IDC revealed that spending on artificial intelligence in the Asia- Pacific region will double in three years, from $9.8 billion in 2023 to $18.6 billion in 2026.

Of which, the Chinese market is leading in the ability to adapt AI technology with a growth rate of up to 27.9% per year in the period 2021 - 2026. Australia ranks 2nd in the region with an estimated AI budget of about 6.4 billion USD in 2026. Meanwhile, India will rank 3rd in spending with a budget of about 3.6 billion USD for AI.

Many Asian countries are in a fever of investment and application of artificial intelligence.

Speaking at the Cyber Security Weekend conference currently being held, Adrian Hia, Managing Director of Asia Pacific at Kaspersky, said that artificial intelligence has existed for a long time, since the time of the famous scientist Alan Turing. However, this is the time when this technology dominates and participates more deeply in daily life.

Explaining the strong investment in AI by Asian countries, according to Mr. Adrian Hia, companies in the region are aware that this technology will help increase the efficiency of asset management, improve product quality and even streamline the supply chain to bring better profits.

From the story of ChatGPT, everyone can see the magic of artificial intelligence, when computers can automatically synthesize and do everything, answer all kinds of questions. However, according to Kaspersky experts, AI is currently being applied for many different purposes, including both good and bad purposes. That is why we are facing more and more phishing attacks using Deepfake, face and voice editing and many other types of cyber attacks.

Security expert Adrian Hia talks about the duality of AI when this technology can serve good purposes, but can also be used for bad actions.

What is the dark side of artificial intelligence?

According to security expert Noushin Shabad, besides Deepfake-style scams, AI can be abused to carry out cyber attacks, especially when used to create tools such as malicious code or malware.

In addition to developing malware, AI can be used in many different stages of a sophisticated cyberattack. As hackers combine complex techniques to avoid detection, they will use AI in many different roles, from reconnaissance to data theft, ” said Noushin Shabad.

That’s not all the dark side of AI. Speaking at Cyber Security Weekend, Vitaly Kamluk, Director of Kaspersky’s Global Research and Analysis Team (GReAT) Asia-Pacific region, revealed that AI has been directly impacting the psychology of cybercriminals.

When committing an act of assault or injury to another person, the perpetrator is often under great psychological pressure from witnessing the consequences of their actions firsthand. However, this is no longer the case with cybercriminals who rob and attack a victim without ever seeing them, especially with the help of artificial intelligence.

More specifically, when cybercriminals use AI to commit crimes, they may blame the technology and feel less responsible for the consequences of the cyberattack.

Kaspersky's "father", Mr. Eugene Kaspersky, also spoke out to warn about the negative aspects of AI.

According to Vitaly Kamluk, using AI to commit crimes magically and quickly brings money and benefits to criminals. This makes criminals no longer feel guilty because in fact, AI is the direct cause of the crime.

Not only criminals, but also security professionals will develop a mentality of “delegating responsibility” to AI as more and more cybersecurity processes and tools are automated and empowered by artificial intelligence.

The rapid development of artificial intelligence, especially after the ChatGPT trend, has caused security experts to have a headache about how to fully exploit the advantages of this technology, while still ensuring network security.

In an age where technology can be used by both good and bad actors, traditional cybersecurity is no longer enough to protect us, says Eugene Kaspersky, CEO of Kaspersky. We need to revolutionize our defenses to ensure a safer digital world .

Losing money because of believing in Deepfake calls Not only defrauding money transfers, cybercriminals also use Deepfake to insert victims' images into pornographic videos, even spreading fake news causing social instability.
