[Video] Ho Chi Minh City: SARS-CoV-2 variant NB.1.8.1 spreads rapidly, proactive response needed

NDO - The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health said that 83% of Covid-19 samples sequenced in the city carried the NB.1.8.1 variant - a sub-variant of the XDV.1 strain, formed from the recombination between JN.1 and XDE. This variant has a fast spreading rate and has appeared in 22 countries.

From week 16 to week 20, the number of Covid-19 cases in the city increased significantly, an average of 11 cases/week, with 26 cases recorded in week 20 alone. Although there have been no serious cases, the health sector still recommends not to be subjective.

The NB.1.8.1 variant has mutations in the RBD spike protein region (T478I, A435S, V445H), increasing its ability to adhere to human cells, causing rapid spread. Symptoms are usually mild, such as fever, cough, sore throat, fatigue, but can last a long time and can be easily confused with the flu.

The Ministry of Health requires localities to review admission and treatment plans, ensure facilities, supplies, and medical personnel.

High-risk groups such as the elderly, people with underlying diseases, and pregnant women need to be closely monitored and given priority for booster vaccinations. People are advised to continue wearing masks, washing hands with sanitizer, limiting gatherings, and proactively seeking medical attention when symptoms appear.
