[Video] Building a university merger project from 2026

On the afternoon of October 5, at a regular Government press conference, the Ministry of Education and Training said it is developing a project to merge and dissolve unqualified universities and vocational schools, and submit it to the Government for approval this year for implementation from 2026.

Deputy Minister of Education and Training Le Tan Dung affirmed that this is a major policy of the Politburo, which will be implemented seriously, scientifically, cautiously but decisively; the project clearly defines the mission of each facility, transparent criteria, and consults with ministries, branches, localities, experts and schools.

According to Resolution 71-NQ/TW, the university education system will be arranged and restructured; research will be conducted to merge research institutes with universities and transfer some schools to local management.

Nationwide, there are 140 public schools subject to reorganization; options include transferring the governing body, merging schools, and dissolving schools that are too small; the Ministry of Education and Training will only directly manage key facilities.
