Vietnam - Australia strive to become each other's leading trade partners

(CPV) - Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son also suggested that Australian businesses continue to make quality, sustainable investments in Vietnam, especially in the fields of green economy, digital economy, circular economy, innovation, etc.

On October 17, within the framework of his visit to Australia and co-chairing the Vietnam - Australia Foreign Ministers' Conference, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son had a working session with Australian Minister of Trade and Tourism Don Farrell.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son welcomed Australia's continued consolidation and diversification of economic relations with partners in the Southeast Asian region in general and Vietnam in particular through the implementation of many practical initiatives and projects within the framework of Australia's Southeast Asia Economic Strategy to 2040. Based on the well-developed Vietnam-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, the Deputy Prime Minister asked Minister Don Farrell to continue supporting Australian businesses to invest in Vietnam, especially in areas where Australia has strengths and Vietnam has potential; promote people-to-people exchanges, open more direct flights between the two countries, and create favorable conditions for Vietnamese people to enter Australia to study, work and travel.

For his part, Trade Minister Don Farrell affirmed that the economic, trade and investment relations between Vietnam and Australia still have much potential for development. The two sides need to continue to effectively implement the Joint Statement on upgrading the relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, especially the pillar of "economic engagement", striving to make the two countries one of each other's top 10 trade partners and double two-way investment as set out in the Enhanced Economic Engagement Strategy (EEES).

The Minister said that the Australian business community is increasingly interested in the Vietnamese market; assessed that the Vietnamese community in Australia is expanding, making many important contributions to Australia's socio-economic development and is an important bridge for bilateral cooperation. Australia will continue to support Vietnam in the fields of high-quality infrastructure, digital infrastructure and climate change adaptation infrastructure, developing small and medium-sized enterprises, human resources development, agriculture, minerals, etc., as well as strengthening coordination in multilateral trade mechanisms such as CPTPP, AANZFTA.

On the same day, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son also attended and delivered a speech at the Australia-Vietnam Policy Institute Conference. Also attending the Conference were Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Chi Dung, Australian Minister of Trade and Tourism Don Farrell, Governor of South Australia Frances Adamson and many experts and scholars from both countries.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister Bui Thanh Son highly appreciated the Australia - Vietnam Policy Institute (AVPI), which, although newly established (March 2024), has organized many meaningful activities, contributing to promoting cooperation, exchange and enhancing understanding between the two countries, advising leaders of both sides to identify "new thinking, new vision and new actions" for the Vietnam - Australia relationship in the future, as the theme of this workshop.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister affirmed that after 50 years of establishing diplomatic relations, the Vietnam-Australia relationship is at its best, bringing inspiring stories and standing at a new starting point, opening up vast space and room for cooperation. The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister expected that the two countries would continue to open their markets to make the most of cooperation frameworks and new-generation free trade agreements that both sides participate in; make breakthroughs in new potential areas, especially in science, technology and innovation; strengthen connection networks, including links between localities and cooperation networks between businesses, associations and chambers of commerce; further expand cooperation from the bilateral level to the sub-regional level.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister also suggested that Australian businesses continue to invest in Vietnam with quality and sustainability, especially in the fields of green economy, digital economy, circular economy, innovation, semiconductor manufacturing, new energy, essential minerals, green finance, biotechnology, healthcare, high-tech agriculture, and high-quality human resource training.

Speaking at the workshop, Minister Don Farrell emphasized that Australia considers ASEAN an important economic partner of Australia, in which Vietnam is one of Australia's priority focuses in the region. Australia has established a 2 billion AUD Southeast Asia Investment Fund to promote Australian trade and investment in Southeast Asia and will continue to support the clean energy transition and infrastructure development in the region.

At the workshop, leaders of the two countries, experts, scholars, and businesses from both sides discussed and found solutions to promote bilateral cooperation in all fields, contributing to the development and prosperity of the two countries in the coming time./.
