The US and China lead the way in exporting fruits and vegetables to Vietnam, with grapes and apples being the most imported in 2024.

According to the General Department of Customs, Vietnam spent 2.4 billion USD importing fruits and vegetables in 2024, an increase of nearly 24% compared to 2023. Of which, consumers mainly consumed fruits and vegetables imported from large markets such as China and the US.

Last year, the value of imported fruits and vegetables from China approached the billion USD mark, up 25% over the same period and accounting for 41% of the total turnover. The US market ranked right behind with a turnover of 544 million USD , up 64% and accounting for more than 22% of Vietnam's total fruit and vegetable import turnover. In total, Vietnam bought over 1.5 billion USD worth of fruits and vegetables from these two markets last year.

In addition, the Vietnamese market also boosted fruit and vegetable imports from Australia and Myanmar with turnover reaching 151 million USD and 138 million USD respectively.

The most imported items include apples ( 275 million USD ), grapes ( 161 million USD ), tangerines ( 91 million USD ), pears ( 48 million USD ), oranges ( 29 million USD ) and durians ( 21 million USD ). In particular, Vietnam's durian imports increased 11 times compared to 2023, but the proportion is still limited.

According to businesses, agricultural products from China and the US have increased sharply thanks to trade agreements such as the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) and the Vietnam-US Bilateral Trade Agreement, with many tax incentives and reduced technical barriers.

It is a fact that Chinese fruits continuously flood the Vietnamese market with new designs. The prices of some fruits from China are also more competitive than those imported from many other markets.

According to Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association (Vinafruit), China is no longer lax on the quality of exported fruits and vegetables as before and has also improved many modern plant varieties. Therefore, the products imported into Vietnam or exported to other countries all have beautiful designs as well as ensure food hygiene and safety.
