According to information from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on October 14 (New York time), the meeting to elect members of the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2026-2028 term took place at the UN headquarters, with the participation of 190 eligible member states.
International recognition and appreciation
Vietnam received 180 votes of support, the highest number among the Asia- Pacific group, and is also the only Asia-Pacific country to be a member of the Human Rights Council for the 2023-2025 term and be re-elected for the 2026-2028 term.
Besides Vietnam, the other 13 member states elected to the Human Rights Council for the 2026-2028 term are India, Pakistan, Iraq, Egypt, South Africa, Mauritius, Angola, Estonia, Slovenia, Chile, Ecuador, Italy, and the United Kingdom.
"This election result reflects the trust and high regard of United Nations members for Vietnam's strong commitments and efforts to promote and protect human rights, as well as Vietnam's contributions and initiatives during its term as a member of the Human Rights Council from 2023 to 2025," the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirmed.
According to the ministry, this also reflects the international community's trust in Vietnam's open foreign policy, its efforts to participate in and contribute to multilateral mechanisms, and its achievements in international integration.
At the same time, this is also an acknowledgment of Vietnam's increasingly strengthened position as an active member and reliable partner for peace, cooperation, and sustainable development.
Vietnam's serious commitment
The Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that in its third term as a member of the Human Rights Council, Vietnam will continue to promote eight priority areas for improving the council's effectiveness.
In addition, it promotes the protection of human rights in the context of climate change and digital transformation, promotes gender equality, protects vulnerable groups, the right to health, the right to work, human rights education, and the right to education.
Vietnam will continue to contribute to the common efforts of the international community to address shared human rights concerns in the spirit of "Respect and understanding - Dialogue and cooperation - All human rights for all".
As a candidate for membership in the Human Rights Council for the 2026-2028 term, Vietnam has made 12 voluntary commitments in various areas of human rights. The Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirms that it will "seriously implement these commitments".
Vietnam's term as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council from 2026 to 2028 will officially begin on January 1, 2026.
