The 114th session of the Council of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) took place in Geneva with the participation of representatives of 175 member countries.
Ambassador Le Thi Tuyet Mai, Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations, the World Trade Organization (WTO) and other international organizations in Geneva, led the Vietnamese delegation to the meeting, along with officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs .
Speaking at the opening session, the new IOM Director General, Ms. Amy Pope, emphasized that 2024 will be a pivotal year for the organization as IOM continues to restructure internally, increase budget and personnel.
Ms. Amy Pope said that IOM's priorities in the coming time include protecting migrants, finding solutions for those forced to flee their homes, responding to climate change and promoting regular migration channels.
Ms. Amy Pope welcomed and called on countries to continue providing flexible funding to IOM so that the organization can better respond to the diverse challenges of migration in the world .
Speaking on behalf of the Vietnamese delegation at the general discussion session of the Session, Ambassador Le Thi Tuyet Mai stated that Vietnam highly appreciates the leading role of IOM in resolving migration issues.
The Ambassador affirmed that Vietnam has been actively implementing policies and measures within the framework of the National Plan for the Implementation of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM).
In addition, Ambassador Le Thi Tuyet Mai also expressed her gratitude for IOM's support to Vietnam in implementing the above-mentioned GCM Agreement. The Ambassador shared concerns about human trafficking and illegal migration, especially risks related to online fraud.
The Ambassador stressed that Vietnam calls on IOM and countries to continue maintaining an open and multilateral approach to migration, in which promoting the central and leading role of IOM; continuing to review emerging challenges in the migration issue, clearly identifying priority measures in the coming time to promote the implementation of the GCM agreement in a substantive manner on a global scale.
Also at the IOM Council Meeting, representatives of IOM member countries actively shared their views, welcoming the important role of IOM in addressing migration challenges; at the same time welcoming IOM's active reform to improve operational efficiency, sharing concerns about the impact of climate change on migration; unanimously emphasizing that countries and partners, through the leadership of IOM, need to strengthen cooperation to promote safe and orderly migration, linked to sustainable development goals, ensuring effective implementation of the GCM Agreement.
