Due to the influence of storm No. 1 in the East Sea, in recent days, Can Tho City has continuously experienced thunderstorms in all districts. The average rainfall is 5-10mm, locally over 15mm/hour. The rain was accompanied by thunderstorms, causing trees to fall, damaging signs and houses of local residents. Specifically, the rain accompanied by thunderstorms on the morning of June 12 broke branches of many star apple trees on Nguyen Trai Street (Ninh Kieu District, Can Tho City); collapsed a welcome gate of Le Binh Ward (Cai Rang District), causing local traffic jams and damaging a motorbike.
According to the People's Committee of Le Binh Ward, the gate of Le Binh Ward is over 5m high, over 7m wide, made of iron frame, located on Le Binh Street. The incident occurred at 9:12 am, fortunately there were no casualties. Mr. Tieu Chi Nguyen, Chairman of the People's Committee of Le Binh Ward, said that the unit has mobilized forces to clean up the scene. The handling work was completed in about an hour, helping traffic return to normal on the above route.
According to the Steering Committee for Disaster Prevention, Search and Rescue of Can Tho City, from the beginning of 2025 to June 12, the Standing Office of the Steering Committee for Disaster Prevention, Search and Rescue of the city recorded 3 types of natural disasters in the area: riverbank landslides, heavy rain with thunderstorms and high tides. Specifically, rain with thunderstorms occurred 6 times in the areas of Binh Thuy, Thot Not, Thoi Lai, Vinh Thanh, Co Do districts, causing 2 houses to collapse, 13 houses to be roofed, without causing any human casualties. The total estimated damage is about 547 million VND. Of which, Binh Thuy district had 1 time, causing 2 houses to be roofed; Thot Not district had 1 time, causing 1 house to be roofed; Vinh Thanh district had 1 time, causing 1 house to be roofed; Thoi Lai district had 2 incidents, 8 houses' roofs were blown off, 1 house and 1 greenhouse growing melon collapsed, estimated damage of about 487 million VND; Co Do district had 1 incident, 1 house's roof was blown off. Riverbank landslides occurred 6 times in Cai Rang, Binh Thuy, O Mon, Thot Not districts and Thoi Lai district, with a total landslide length of 168m, completely destroying 5 houses, affecting 3 traffic routes. The landslides did not cause any human casualties, but estimated property damage was over 1.8 billion VND. Since the beginning of the year, the city has also recorded 1 high tide in late March and early April 2025, flooding some roads in Ninh Kieu district, causing difficulties for people when participating in traffic.
Mr. Huynh Thanh Viet, Head of the Irrigation Sub-Department, Chief of Office of the Steering Committee for Disaster Prevention, Search and Rescue of Can Tho City, said: "The thunderstorms and landslides have caused severe damage to many households whose houses were affected. The local government has also promptly mobilized forces to support households in repairing their houses. The Steering Committee for Disaster Prevention, Search and Rescue of the city has promptly supported households whose houses collapsed or had their roofs blown off due to natural disasters. Thereby, it has demonstrated the spirit of "mutual love and support", helping people have the conditions to repair their houses and stabilize their lives...".

According to the Steering Committee for Disaster Prevention and Control of Can Tho City, in recent times, all levels and sectors in Can Tho City have closely followed the direction of the Government , the Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control, the National Committee for Natural Disaster Response and Search and Rescue, and the People's Committee of Can Tho City in implementing natural disaster prevention and control and search and rescue. Thanks to that, the damage caused by natural disasters in the area has been minimized. In particular, the attention and sensitivity in leadership of Party committees and authorities at all levels are important factors in implementing response work and limiting damage caused by natural disasters. Especially, the "Four on-the-spot" motto has been skillfully applied to mobilize the combined strength of sectors, levels and people in natural disaster prevention and control. Party committees and authorities at all levels also pay attention to timely disaster relief work, mobilizing local forces (funds, labor, materials, etc.) to support affected households to quickly overcome the consequences, stabilize their lives, and restore production.
To proactively prevent, respond promptly and effectively, minimizing damage caused by natural disasters in the coming time, the Steering Committee for Disaster Prevention and Control - PCTT & TKCN of Can Tho City requires all levels, departments, branches and local authorities to strengthen disaster prevention and control, search and rescue work in 2025. In particular, units strictly implement the provisions of the law on disaster prevention and control, actively propagate and disseminate knowledge to help people raise awareness of risks and dangers caused by natural disasters and the responsibilities of individuals and groups in prevention and control work at the unit. Organize to review, update, supplement and adjust disaster prevention and control plans, search and rescue in accordance with the characteristics of the locality and unit for all forms of natural disasters that may occur. Complete the organization, force, fully prepare materials, means and logistics according to the 4 on-site motto to respond to natural disasters most effectively; Organize training on disaster response plans at the grassroots level to improve the readiness of rescue forces.
