On the morning of July 16, 2025, the Trade Promotion Agency, the Import-Export Department and the Vietnam Trade Office in the US held a workshop: "Promoting trade to the US market".
A series of questions from domestic businesses were sent to Mr. Marc Mealy, Executive Vice President of the US-ASEAN Business Council (USABC) for advice on how to successfully export goods to the US.
Providing information to businesses attending the workshop, Mr. Marc Mealy said that the US is the world's largest importer of goods, annually importing over 4,000 billion USD from global suppliers, including Vietnam.
The goods that the US imports are also very diverse, from machinery and equipment, consumer goods (textiles, pharmaceuticals, footwear, electronics, etc.), creating great opportunities for exporting countries. US consumption of goods and services currently accounts for 60-70% of GDP.
Giving advice to Vietnamese businesses on how to approach US consumers in the context of complex tariffs, Mr. Marc Mealy said that businesses need to produce and market essential consumer products, because even though the prices may be more expensive, consumers still have to pay.
Next is to focus on niche or specific market segments. For example, organic certified foods, because this product group can be sold at a premium price because consumers are willing to pay.
Along with that, businesses should participate more in specialized trade fairs and conferences in the US. According to him, this way of trade promotion helps businesses quickly grasp the "taste" of consumers and meet new customers.
“As a consumer of many products made in Vietnam, I really hope to promote the export of Vietnamese goods to the US. In the current context, Vietnamese businesses need to promote product branding and exploit the main export methods to the US, including: Direct export to US retailers (B2B) and direct export to US consumers (B2C)," Mr. Marc Mealy noted.
From the US, Mr. Do Ngoc Hung, Commercial Counselor, Head of the Vietnam Trade Office in the US, said that despite fluctuations in the global economy and trade, Vietnam still maintains a strong export growth rate, is an important factor in the international supply chain, and is a competitive goods supply location.
According to data from the US International Trade Commission (ITC), in the first 6 months of 2025 and the first 6 months of this year, Vietnam's exports to the US reached over 71 billion USD, a sharp increase over the same period.
The reason for the increase is that US importers are speeding up imports to stock up on goods due to concerns about tariffs. This also means that Vietnamese goods are highly appreciated by importers and consumers due to their competitive prices and diverse designs.
"In the journey to find more suppliers in Vietnam, Walmart, Cosco, Amazon..., large American enterprises all revealed that they will come to Vietnam at the event "Connecting international supply chains - Viet Nam International Sourcing and Export Forum 2025 scheduled to be held from September 4-6, 2025 in Ho Chi Minh City", Mr. Hung said.
According to information from the Vietnam Trade Promotion Office in New York, USA, the US is currently restructuring its supply chain, creating a large space for exporters, and the advantage for Vietnam is that trade relations are complementary, not directly competitive.
But the challenge is the rapidly increasing technical barriers, domestic protection policies, more trade defense cases, and Vietnamese exporters also face high freight costs.
Affirming that there is still a lot of room for increased trade exchange because the investment and trade relations between the two countries are at their best, Mr. Hoang Minh Chien, Deputy Director of the Trade Promotion Department ( Ministry of Industry and Trade ) emphasized that the key is that businesses must continue to improve their supply capacity, increase compliance with the technical standards of US buyers, proactively source input materials, and be transparent about origin...
Accordingly, the Trade Promotion Agency is building a trade promotion ecosystem on a digital platform to support businesses to quickly and firmly reach target markets, including the US.
