At a regular press conference this afternoon, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Pham Thu Hang commented on the news that Thai and Cambodian soldiers recently clashed in an armed clash at the border area. The incident occurred right after the ASEAN summit.

The spokesperson said that information about the incident had been communicated to both sides. "We believe that all disagreements will be resolved by the parties through dialogue and peaceful measures, in accordance with the agreement of the two countries, the spirit of ASEAN solidarity and international law."

Cambodian and Thai soldiers briefly exchanged gunfire on May 28 in a disputed area between Cambodia’s Preah Vihear province and Thailand’s Ubon Ratchathani province. The incident resulted in casualties. The two sides later held a phone call and agreed to a ceasefire.

Thai and Cambodian soldiers have returned to their original positions to await further action from their superiors. The last serious clash between Thailand and Cambodia was in 2011 over the ancient Preah Vihear temple area, which has been the flashpoint of a decades-long border dispute between the two countries.

Thailand's Prime Minister said on May 28 that the country's military commander has asked his soldiers to "exercise utmost restraint" and avoid escalating tensions in the border area with Cambodia.

The Cambodian Prime Minister said that communication channels between the two countries' militaries are still maintained to prevent tensions from escalating, restore order and constructive relations between the two countries' forces.
