TPO - From one of the poorest countries in Asia in 2000, Vietnam has become an upper-middle-income country and an important manufacturing center of the world. In 2023, Vietnam's global trade increased to more than 680 billion USD and the size of the economy reached about 450 billion USD.

The book “Vietnam – Asia’s Rising Star” discusses the hypothesis that Vietnam is the new economic tiger of Asia like South Korea and Taiwan (China) has just been published in Vietnamese. This book was written by Mr. Brook Taylor and Mr. Sam Korsmoe and was first published in English by Silkworm Books International in October 2023.

The book “Vietnam - Rising Star of Asia” has just been published.

Over the past 25 years, Vietnam has developed from one of Asia's poorest countries to an upper-middle-income country and an important global manufacturing hub. In 2000, Vietnam's total global trade (exports plus imports) with the world was $30 billion and the country's GDP was about $31 billion.

By the end of 2023, Vietnam's global trade had increased to more than $680 billion and its economy was worth about $450 billion. In addition, the poverty rate had fallen to less than 1% from more than 50% in the 1990s.

These are historical trends backed by data. The more interesting questions about Vietnam’s economic future are: Can Vietnam maintain the high growth rates of the past years? Are free trade and foreign direct investment the path to sustainable wealth for the country?

Can Vietnam develop and progress like previous economic tigers such as South Korea and Taiwan (China) - countries that experienced 50 years of economic growth to become high-income countries? These are the topics that Mr. Brook Taylor and Mr. Sam Korsmoe address in this book.

Mr. Brook Taylor and Mr. Sam Korsmoe are foreign experts who have lived in Vietnam for many years. Mr. Brook Taylor is from New Zealand and has lived and worked in Vietnam since 1997, while Mr. Sam Korsmoe is from the US and has been in Vietnam since 1990. Both have witnessed the country's incredible change over the past 25 years and are curious about whether this growth will be sustainable in the next 25 years.

Vietnam can develop and progress like previous economic tigers such as South Korea and Taiwan (China).

“Based on almost every measurable business and economic indicator, Vietnam has grown consistently over the past 25 years. We wanted to know whether the country could continue to grow for another 25 years, and if so, what factors would drive this to happen?”, Mr. Brook Taylor shared.

Meanwhile, Mr. Sam Korsmoe said: “We want to research and write about how and why Vietnam has developed so far. But more importantly, we want to know whether Vietnam can escape the middle-income trap in the future.”

After 3 years of research and writing, the book Vietnam - Asia's Rising Star (English and Vietnamese versions) was published with 12 chapters, including six case studies and a forecast of the economic outlook to 2050.
