NDO - On the morning of November 16, at the Center for Culture, Sports and Communications of Bac Ninh city, the Ministry of Health coordinated with the People's Committee of Bac Ninh province and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in Vietnam to organize a rally: Vietnam responds to World Day for Premature Babies in 2024, with the theme "Ensuring that every premature baby receives the best health care".

Attending the rally were comrades Tran Van Thuan, Deputy Minister of Health, Ngo Tan Phuong, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Bac Ninh province, Ms. Silvia Danailov, UNICEF Representative in Vietnam; representatives of departments, bureaus and institutes under the Ministry of Health ; leaders of the Department of Health, Centers for Disease Control of some northern provinces and local people.

Speaking at the rally, Deputy Minister Tran Van Thuan said that Vietnam is the first country in Asia and the second country in the world to ratify the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. Among the four groups of basic rights of children, there are two groups of rights related to the health sector: "Children's right to survival and right to development". Implementing the above Convention, with the attention of the Party, the State, the investment of the Government, and the efforts and dedication of the medical staff from the central to local levels; the active participation of ministries, branches, and the support of international and domestic organizations, Vietnam has successfully completed ahead of schedule the indicators of reducing maternal mortality and child mortality; reducing child malnutrition, which has been highly appreciated by the international community, a bright spot in the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals.

Deputy Minister Tran Van Thuan spoke at the rally.

Specifically, the indicators have decreased sharply from 2015 to 2023, namely: The mortality rate of children under 5 years old decreased from 22.1‰ to 18.2‰; in children under one year old decreased from 14.7%o to 12.1%o; in newborns decreased from 12‰ to 9.8‰. In addition, Vietnam is actively implementing solutions and professional interventions to reduce neonatal mortality, with special attention paid to reducing mortality of low birth weight/premature infants.

In the world , one in every 10 babies born is premature, and Vietnam is no exception. According to the report, the rate of premature and low birth weight babies accounts for 19% of the disease model of newborns. The causes of infant mortality are premature birth, low birth weight, asphyxia, birth trauma, malformations and infectious diseases, of which premature birth and low birth weight account for 25%.

However, this cause can be prevented by simple practical measures such as: pregnant women need to have regular check-ups to detect risks, abnormalities, and diseases; eat a full, balanced, and reasonable diet, work and exercise appropriately; provide skin-to-skin care and early and exclusive breastfeeding, and care for premature and underweight babies using the Kangaroo method.

Fortunately, in recent years, Vietnam has made remarkable progress in technical expertise in the field of neonatology. We have successfully treated, cared for and raised many premature babies, weighing less than 500 grams, bringing endless joy and happiness to many families with premature babies. The children were saved and developed normally physically and mentally, and went to school like other children.

This is a source of encouragement and motivation for the medical staff and the entire community to continue to accompany, contribute, join hands, contribute, and act more for premature babies, for the current and future young generation of Vietnam.

Deputy Minister Tran Van Thuan emphasized that, in addition to the successes and great strides in improving maternal and child health nationwide, Vietnam currently faces three major challenges that require special attention. Specifically, the gap in maternal and child health between regions, especially in mountainous, remote, and ethnic minority areas is two to three times higher than in urban areas, and maternal mortality among H'Mong ethnic minorities is even seven times higher than that of Kinh people; the rate of reduction in infant mortality is much slower than that of children under one year old and children under five years old; and the mortality rate of children under five years old in Vietnam is still quite far behind that of developed countries (the mortality rate of children under five years old in these countries is only 2-3 ‰).

Given the above situation, Vietnam needs to make more efforts in interventions to reduce neonatal mortality, especially reducing neonatal mortality due to premature birth and low birth weight, ensuring that all premature babies receive the best health care. At the same time, ensuring that all children born live, develop comprehensively and contribute towards a generation of Vietnamese youth who are physically healthy, mentally pure and intellectually developed.

To gradually reduce the rate of premature and low birth weight babies, contributing to reducing infant mortality, Deputy Minister Tran Van Thuan said: In addition to the investment attention of the Party and the State, the efforts of the Health Sector, it is necessary to have the coordination of ministries, branches, Party committees and local authorities; the joint efforts of the entire community, awareness and implementation of health care for pregnant women; the participation and support of international and domestic organizations to synchronously deploy solutions from communication, to care for pregnant women, prevention of premature birth and care and treatment for premature babies.

With international experience, with the scientific foundation and practice of Vietnam, we believe that it is completely possible to reduce the rate of premature and low birth weight babies, care for, treat and nurture premature and low birth weight babies to develop healthily, contributing to providing quality human resources for the development of the country.

Speaking at the rally, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Bac Ninh province, Ngo Tan Phuong, called on Party committees at all levels, authorities and all people to join hands to respond more actively to reduce the rate of premature birth, low birth weight, care, treatment and nurturing premature and low birth weight babies in a good way with the message "Caring for premature babies is the responsibility of all of us, let's act together" in Bac Ninh province in particular and in localities across the country in general.
