Giving life to patients
Before the hemodialysis room was built at the District Medical Center, the lives of 130 people with kidney disease in Huong Son were a series of endless trips. Every week, they had to travel dozens, even hundreds of kilometers to Vinh City (Nghe An), Ha Tinh General Hospital or Duc Tho District Medical Center to fight for their lives.
The dream of a local dialysis center has always been the desire of patients and the concern of the District Medical Center. And then, a noble gesture turned that dream into reality when Ha Tinh Petroleum Company supported 11 artificial kidney dialysis machines with a total value of 5 billion VND. These are not just machines but a continuation of hearts, a living proof of the spirit of "loving others as you love yourself" of the Vietnamese people.

However, having machines is not enough. For these modern devices to truly bring life to patients, a team of highly skilled doctors and nurses is needed. Huong Son District Medical Center immediately sent 1 doctor and 3 nurses to Ha Tinh General Hospital for 6 months of intensive training, along with 1 technician to study at Bach Mai Hospital for 1 month.
This is a serious investment, demonstrating a high determination in ensuring the quality of medical examination and treatment. Doctor Kieu Viet Thuy, Head of the Department of Emergency Resuscitation - Anti-Poison, who is directly in charge of the dialysis room, shared: "Although it is difficult and tiring, the joy of the patients is the greatest motivation for us doctors to always try."

April 9, 2025 became a memorable milestone when the first kidney dialysis was successfully performed at Huong Son District Medical Center. Notably, in the first 10 days, a doctor and a technician from Hanoi Medical University Hospital were on duty, "holding hands to guide", imparting valuable experience to the nursing team and doctors at the center and ensuring the system operates effectively.
It is known that since its operation, more than 350 patients have received dialysis. The center can currently provide dialysis services for 30 patients/day, each patient receiving dialysis for 4 hours, alternating 3 sessions/week on days 3-5-7 or 2-4-6. This is an impressive number, showing the efficiency of operation and the actual needs of patients.

The life of Nguyen Binh Dat (Son Tay commune, Huong Son) used to be a sad epic of journeys. Two years ago, when kidney disease struck, he had to travel from Vu Quang to Ha Tinh General Hospital to sustain his life. Then, one day, news that Huong Son District Medical Center had a hemodialysis machine lit a glimmer of hope in him.
"For the past two years, every time it was time for dialysis, I was always worried. I was worried about the long distance, my health, and the financial burden on my wife's shoulders. The trips gradually wore down my strength and joy of life. When I heard that the District Medical Center had a dialysis machine, I was so happy I cried. Coming back here is closer, less difficult, I feel like I'm living again" - Mr. Dat confided.

Mr. Nguyen Quyet Danh (Quang Diem Commune, Huong Son) used to regularly travel long distances to maintain his life. For three years, he had to stay at Nghe An Transport Hospital, a long and costly journey.
"Going for dialysis three times a week in Nghe An is a difficult process. I have to travel far, wasting both time and money. My health is already weak, and having to endure long trips, sometimes I feel exhausted. Luckily, now there is a dialysis machine right in the district, I no longer have to worry about long distance travel. I have more time for my family, and my health is more stable. Being treated near home is truly a great blessing, helping me and other patients to ease the burden a lot" - Mr. Danh shared.

For Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Nhan (Ham Truong commune, Huong Son), being treated in a friendly, professional environment, especially close to home, not only reduces the physical burden of the trips but also brings mental comfort, helping her feel much more confident on this challenging journey.
"What makes me feel secure and satisfied is the dedicated and friendly attitude of the medical team. The nurses and doctors here not only do their jobs properly but are also very friendly, often talking and encouraging us. If we have any questions or concerns, they listen and explain very carefully, making us feel truly cared for, no longer feeling alone fighting the disease" - Ms. Nhan confided.

The sincere sharing of Mr. Nguyen Binh Dat, Mr. Nguyen Quyet Danh and Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Nhan is not only their own story, but also the voice of kidney patients who are finding the light of hope at Huong Son District Medical Center.
From the burden of long distances and high costs, they can now be treated right at home, in a friendly space, and be cared for by a dedicated team of doctors and nurses.
They are the silent "warriors"
Behind the happy smiles of patients is the tireless dedication of the team of doctors and nurses. In the hemodialysis room, their job is not simply to carry out medical orders, but a race against time, with potential risks.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Huyen, one of the nurses who directly cares for patients, shares about the work rhythm: "Every day, we have to receive and serve dozens of patients.
Each dialysis session lasts 4 hours, during which time we have to constantly be on duty by the patient’s bedside. The work starts with the preparation of the machines, installation of the chain system, and the needle for each patient meticulously, ensuring absolute sterility.”

During the dialysis process, nurses must be on duty every minute, closely monitoring all developments on the dialysis machine screen and on the patient's body. "We must regularly check blood pressure, pulse, temperature and closely monitor the dialysis process to supplement medication or adjust the machine in time," Ms. Huyen explained.
Dialysis patients are typically in poor health and are prone to sudden changes such as low blood pressure, convulsions or anaphylactic shock. Therefore, nurses must always be on high alert to quickly handle any unexpected situations.
"If a patient shows any unusual signs, even the smallest ones, we must react immediately to ensure their safety. Furthermore, this job requires meticulousness and absolute precision in recording records, monitoring fluid intake and output, and managing medications. Nurses are also the ones who directly advise and reassure patients, helping them overcome anxiety and stress during the treatment process," Ms. Huyen added.

For nurse Le Thi Thu Hoai, the hemodialysis room is not only a workplace but also a common home, where every staff member and doctor strives their best for the patients.
“To operate the machinery system effectively and provide the best care for patients, the nursing team has undergone thorough training. We studied techniques for 6 months at Ha Tinh General Hospital, then received direct “hand-holding” instruction from doctors from Hanoi Medical University Hospital. It was a valuable opportunity for us to solidify our expertise,” Ms. Hoai confided.

The journey of learning and practicing has helped Ms. Hoai and her colleagues completely master the technique of artificial kidney dialysis. However, that "mastery" comes with great responsibility and many sacrifices. "The nature of the job requires us to be on duty continuously, closely monitoring every minute because the patient's health can change unexpectedly. Even though it is a holiday, we cannot fully rest, but everyone is willing. Because we understand that each shift, each of our dedication contributes to preserving life and bringing hope to the sick" - Ms. Hoai shared.

As the person directly "steering" the dialysis room, Dr. Kieu Viet Thuy - Head of the Department of Emergency Resuscitation and Anti-Poisoning understands the challenges and happiness in the job. "In fact, in the first days when the machines arrived, we were happy but also very pressured. The number of patients was large, while the team was not enough. Sending staff to study for 6 months at the provincial level, then 1 month at the central level was a big arrangement and investment. We know that the burden on our shoulders is not only the technique, but also the trust of hundreds of families" - Dr. Thuy confided.

However, all difficulties seem to disappear when witnessing the positive changes of patients. "Although the work in the department is extremely hard, requiring constant vigilance every minute, when seeing patients receiving dialysis right in the local area, their faces are less tired, especially those who have had to travel far for many years, that joy is greater than anything. That is the biggest motivation for us doctors to try our best every day" - Doctor Thuy confided.
Thanks to the learning, technical mastery and dedication of each staff member, since its operation, the center has served more than 350 patients. This is a significant number, showing the effectiveness of the combination of modern equipment and professional people. In the coming time, we will create conditions for the team of doctors and nurses to have more conditions to improve their expertise, aiming to care for and serve patients better and better.
