Overcoming adversity
After many appointments, we had the opportunity to talk with Nguyen Thi Mo. The first impression of the girl born in 2003, an assistant and interpreter at a foreign company in Da Nang , was a gentle smile and bright, energetic eyes. Small and simple, Mo exudes a positive energy that makes the person opposite immediately feel the strong spirit of someone who has gone through many losses and disadvantages.
Born in a poor rural area in Nghe An province, Nguyen Thi Mo lost her parents at a young age. Without the protection and care of her parents, the childhood of the four Mo sisters was filled with misery and deprivation. Luckily, in 2005, the four Mo sisters were welcomed to the SOS Children's Village Dong Hoi. That year, Mo was just 2 years old.
From here, the lives of those orphans began a new page with a new world , a world of houses close together, small green gardens and importantly, here Mo had a mother. The small warm house in the village not only sheltered her from the rainy and sunny days, storms but was also a place to nurture love, where she was taught, shared and grew up like any other normal child.

Growing up in the love and protection of her mothers and aunts in the village, especially her mother Pham Thi Thinh, who directly took care of and raised her, Mo learned how to live in harmony, know how to share, and know how to rise up by her own willpower.
In the house named Hoa Marigold, Mo grew up with sisters who were not related by blood but had the same fate. Warm meals, hugs when she suddenly woke up in the middle of the night or the times the whole family gathered to clean the small garden... became the luggage for the ambitious little girl to walk more firmly.
The will to "nurture" dreams
Perhaps, few people can imagine that behind the small figure and radiant smile of Nguyen Thi Mo is a long and challenging journey. From a little girl who lost her parents at a young age, Mo has gone through difficult days with nothing but love at the SOS Children's Village Dong Hoi and the desire to constantly improve. Mo learned how to turn pain into strength, turning disadvantages into motivation to strive.
“Many times, when I see my friends with their parents close by to encourage them, I also feel very sad. But then, I tell myself, I still have my mother Thinh, my aunts in the village and especially my uncle Nguyen Ngoc Ninh who always gives me all his care and love. Until now, when I am old enough to feel many things, for me, being able to live in the village, receiving the kindness, care and sharing from everyone is truly a blessing. Thanks to that, I have trained myself to be persistent, to constantly strive and strive, to take achievements as a gift to repay the kindness I receive,” Mo confided.
Always aware of her own circumstances, Mo used studying as a motivation to strive to escape her fate. She always reminded herself to try twice, three times harder to be worthy of the love given. Throughout 12 years of high school, Mo was always an excellent student. Each time she achieved a high score, each certificate of merit received was a motivation for the little girl to continue moving forward. And with excellent achievements, Mo passed the entrance exam to Vo Nguyen Giap High School for the Gifted and then, passed the entrance exam to Hue University of Foreign Languages, majoring in Chinese.
“For us, Mo is a shining example of perseverance. Despite her special circumstances, she has never given up; on the contrary, she has always strived to improve. Mo’s excellent academic achievements, maturity and confidence today are the pride of Thinh’s mother and the village, and are also a motivation and inspiration for many other children in the village,” said Nguyen Ngoc Ninh, Director of SOS Children’s Village Dong Hoi.
Entering the university, the path became more challenging when Mo had to study and work part-time to make ends meet. However, the little girl once again proved her will, determination and mettle on the path of education. The result of 4 years of hard work was an excellent graduation certificate with a GPA of 3.92/4.
Ngay Mo held her diploma in her hand, hugged her mother Thinh tightly in the sunny school yard, both eyes were blurred with happiness. It was not only a moment marking a brilliant learning journey but also the "sweet fruit" of a difficult journey, where determination and faith go hand in hand to help an orphaned girl reach her dream.
Currently, Nguyen Thi Mo is working as an assistant and interpreter for a foreign company in Da Nang. Mo's success is not only her own pride but also the joy and sweet achievement of Thinh's mother and of SOS Children's Village Dong Hoi. Even though she has grown up and has her own life, Mo still always looks back to the village, the place that gave her a warm home.
“What makes me most proud is not only Mo's academic achievements, but also that she has grown up to be a loving, sharing person, always responsible for herself and those around her,” said Ms. Pham Thi Thinh.
Peace of Mind
