Vietjet and units in seconds, hours, and sessions

BPO - On April 21, Tan Son Nhat airport, terminal T1, the area reserved for Vietjet airline, many people were shocked: In the Vietjet terminal area, thousands of passengers created a scene no different from a corner of a 19th century country market, noisy, arguing, even cursing, people sitting, lying down, sleeping, walking around exercising, people taking their phones to charge because they ran out of battery...

Our group went to Cat Bi (Hai Phong), bought tickets for flight VJ1280, departing at 4:10 p.m. Early in the morning, the first time we were changed to flight VJ1278, departing at 8:20 p.m. In the afternoon, halfway from Binh Phuoc to the airport, the airline announced a delay for the second time, moving it to 9:20 p.m. Arriving at the airport, when checking in our luggage, the third time, Vietjet staff said the flight was delayed, departing at 10:00 p.m. We wandered around the waiting room for nearly 2 hours, the fourth time, the electronic board announced another flight delay, departing at 00:00 on April 22.

And when I turned on the computer to write these lines, it was nearly 3 hours into the new day of April 22nd. My 2 colleagues and I, as well as thousands of other passengers, were still waiting to be able to "Fly is fun" as Vietjet's slogan says.

Adults, children, people going to work, people going home, people traveling … everyone. Wandering around the airport, thousands of people waited for 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13… hours with the explanation “The plane is late” and still not knowing when it would be their turn.

Terminal T1, Tan Son Nhat airport, Vietjet area, at 3:20 a.m. on April 22, hundreds of customers whose flights were delayed the day before still do not know when they will be able to depart.

The Vietjet terminal area was packed and crowded. Vietjet passengers from Ho Chi Minh City traveling all over the country were “locked” at the airport. Arguing and arguing endlessly without solving anything, gradually getting tired, no longer having the energy to argue and argue anymore, so they just sat and waited…

Many people bought tickets for the afternoon flight, to have dinner with their relatives in the evening, but were not taken to the plane until 10 pm, and after 2 hours on the plane, at 00:30, they were taken back to the terminal to wait. Some passengers got angry with Vietjet staff, demanding a refund, canceling their tickets...

Vietjet has always been famous for delays. But a series of flights being delayed multiple times, each time for several hours in an unusual way, must have a special reason. What is worth mentioning is that thousands of passengers were not clearly informed by the person in charge about the reason. Vietjet staff just responded robotically, "The plane is late", and then had to endure the annoyance, frustration, and anger of the customers.

There are a series of issues, that is just from a personal perspective. The bigger issue is the reputation of the business, the bigger issue is the image of Vietnam, the national reputation in the eyes of international tourists.

Building a national brand and image is a process, with no small cost. Unfortunately, among the thousands of passengers who were deported at Tan Son Nhat airport on April 21, there were hundreds of international tourists, of all skin colors, genders, and ages.

The impression of being “locked” at the airport for dozens of hours is certainly an unforgettable experience for them in Vietnam. And not only on April 21, that impression will be multiplied with their friends, relatives, and community for a long time after this day.

Profit for businesses, from which businesses grow stronger, contribute better to the community, any business will be supported by the community, especially service businesses. But if businesses benefit, but only in the short term and disregard, or even do not care about the interests of customers, not only will customers express their attitudes, but there also needs to be sanctions from authorities to protect a healthy business environment, especially to prevent damage to the national image.

And that sanction needs to be public and transparent so that the community can join hands with reputable businesses, and at the same time turn their backs on low-reputable businesses, just for themselves. Only by doing that can we achieve transportation civilization like in Japan: Shinkansen bullet trains as well as air flights, if there is a delay, the unit of measurement is seconds, not hours, days like Vietjet.
