Hundreds of life jackets that no longer meet safety standards have been "reborn" into a new life, becoming highly applicable bags, helping to reduce a large amount of waste released into the environment.
On this special flight, Vietnam Airlines implemented environmental protection activities including: giving passengers bags recycled from old life jackets, serving meals made from sustainable foods, and calling on passengers to bring personal items instead of using disposable items on the flight.
Passengers on the flight were especially delighted with the meaningful gift from Vietnam Airlines.
From old life jackets that no longer meet safety regulations and cannot be repaired after periodic technical inspections, Vietnam Airlines has cooperated with social enterprise Limloop to recycle hundreds of old life jackets into highly applicable handbags for passengers. This is one of the activities that Vietnam Airlines has implemented on the roadmap to build a development strategy in parallel with environmental protection, reducing greenhouse gas emissions when the amount of nylon waste and plastic waste released into the environment is too large. More specifically, these handbags are also created by the hands of disabled craftsmen and those in special circumstances who are working in Limloop.
The recycled bags are made even more special when they are made by disabled craftsmen working at social enterprise Limloop.
Meals based on sustainable, nutritionally balanced diets are created and produced by Noi Bai Aviation Catering Joint Stock Company, a member unit of Vietnam Airlines.
In the near future, the airline also plans to cooperate with VietHarvest - a model for rescuing surplus food, to bring quality meals to organizations and individuals in difficult circumstances. This is also one of the contents that Vietnam Airlines participates in the "Sustainable Flight Challenge" in 2023, with the desire to be able to widely communicate internationally about the positive values for society that this activity brings.
In the second year of the "Sustainable Flight" challenge, Vietnam Airlines has called on passengers to bring their own water bottles, blankets or warm clothes, toothpaste and toothbrushes to use instead of the items provided on the flight, contributing to reducing disposable waste such as paper cups, toothbrushes, etc. With this small action, each passenger will be a "messenger" spreading messages about environmental protection, responding to climate change for sustainable development. This is also an extremely meaningful action that actively contributes to raising public awareness and responding to practical solutions to minimize environmental impacts on flights.
Passengers who bring personal items on board will receive a 10% discount code for their next international trip in 2023 with Vietnam Airlines.
As a passenger on the Hanoi - Frankfurt flight participating in the challenge, Ms. Mai Huong (Hanoi) expressed: "From the meaningful gift to the changes in the use of materials on the plane, I have seen the humane values that this flight brings to the environment. I believe that, like me, other passengers are very excited because they have special and different experiences when participating in Vietnam Airlines' sustainable flight" .
Mr. Dang Anh Tuan - Head of Communications Department of Vietnam Airlines said: "Participating in the sustainable flight challenge is one of the outstanding activities of Vietnam Airlines on the pioneering journey towards sustainable development. In addition to the practical significance towards environmental protection and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the program also contributes to promoting and spreading the good values of the country and community to domestic people and international friends. In the coming time, Vietnam Airlines will continue to implement activities towards environmental friendliness, climate friendliness, ensuring sustainable business activities towards the goal of net emissions of "0" by 2050".
The Sustainable Flight Challenge (TSFC) is an activity initiated by the Skyteam airline alliance to encourage sustainable development initiatives in the aviation sector. Not only does it raise awareness and encourage creativity, it also contributes to spreading solutions for environmental protection and sustainable development. From there, airlines can implement practical measures to help reduce the impact of flights on the environment and bring about measurable results.
This year’s challenge attracted the participation of 22 airlines, including 15 from the Skyteam alliance. In the first category, airlines participated by organizing long-haul flights of over 5,000 km and evaluating the operational efficiency and environmental protection on these flights.
