Coach Ange Postecoglou's "hot seat" at Tottenham is becoming the center of attention when many sources said that club president Daniel Levy has decided to change the head coach position, despite the fact that the Australian strategist has just helped Spurs end a title drought that has lasted since 2008.
Ange Postecoglou with Tottenham players after the Europa League final
Tottenham had a turbulent season last season. Despite winning the Europa League after a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the final, Tottenham were a disappointment in the Premier League. They finished just above the relegation zone, losing 22 games – the most in Premier League history for a team that has not been relegated. It was also Tottenham’s worst season in the top flight of English football in 48 years.
Tottenham have not been in their best form all season.
However, Coach Postecoglou still shows his determination to continue working at Spurs. "I am planning for next season. We have just won a title - something the club has waited for a long time - and I do not want the team to just enjoy this moment and then stop. I want people to think far ahead, that this is just the beginning" - he shared in a media interview.
At the Europa League victory parade, Postecoglou insisted: "Season three will be even better than season two", implicitly declaring that he still wants to stay with Spurs for the long term.
However, behind those positive statements are real concerns for the Australian coach. There have been many rumors that Tottenham have started negotiations with potential candidates to replace Postecoglou, such as Thomas Frank (Brentford), Marco Silva (Fulham) or Andoni Iraola (Bournemouth).
The first title after 17 years is unlikely to "save" Postecoglou's seat
Postecoglou, 59, has struggled to accept the news of his possible sacking, especially after having just led the club to European glory. "To be honest, it feels strange to have to answer questions about my future when we have just achieved something unprecedented. But I understand - no one else in the club can speak at this moment, and I have to take responsibility," he said after the 4-1 defeat to Brighton in the final round of the season.
The Australian also highlighted the lasting impact he has had on each team he has coached. "Every club I have worked for, I have left a lasting impression. Those teams have continued to thrive even after I left. I believe this is the time for Tottenham to break out and become a real contender for the title every year."
Chairman Daniel Levy worries about Tottenham's future if they continue down the same old path
While Postecoglou is adamant about his long-term future, there is turmoil within the club. British media reports suggest Tottenham are planning to offload up to 13 players in the summer transfer window and are close to completing a £21m deal – moves that could see the club gearing up for a new era with a new coaching staff.
Fans were divided, with some backing a change after a disappointing Premier League campaign, while others felt Postecoglou deserved another chance after a historic European triumph.
