Famous play by author Luu Quang Vu opens 'Television Stage'

The classic play “Me and Us” by playwright Luu Quang Vu, staged by Hanoi Drama Theater, was chosen as the opening work for the program “Television Stage” broadcast monthly on platforms of Hanoi Radio and Television.

On the afternoon of May 30, Hanoi Radio held a press conference to introduce the program "Television Stage" to bring outstanding stage works closer to the public.

According to Mr. Nguyen Kim Khiem, Director of Hanoi Radio, in 1986, in the atmosphere of the country entering the period of renovation, Vietnamese literature and art witnessed a strong "unleashing". The theatrical works born in that period were not only rich in artistic value but also touched on core issues of society, carrying a spirit of criticism, arousing the desire for change of an entire era.

“Among them, the plays of author Luu Quang Vu are the most typical voice for that spirit, expressing the desire to live, dialogue and change in Vietnamese society during the renovation period,” said Mr. Khiem.

Mr. Khiem emphasized the importance of theater in shaping social thinking and spreading cultural values: “We hope that through the program 'Television Stage', the vitality of theater will not only exist on the stage but also spread widely through television, social networks and digital platforms to reach a diverse audience today.”

The play “Me and Us” was born in 1984, in the context of the country starting to build a spirit of innovation. The work is a courageous voice with a profound spirit of criticism, condemning the stagnant conservatism of the subsidy mechanism and raising the big question of the choice between “Safety-Compliance” or “Commitment-Change.” After more than 40 years, that message is still hot and suitable for the context of a society that is gradually integrating and developing sustainably.

According to People's Artist Trung Hieu, Director of the Vietnam Drama Theater, with innovative stage language, modern lighting and sound, and fast-paced rhythm, the play seems to have been "transformed" to reflect the reality of today's society - where each person must constantly overcome prejudices, old habits, overcome the barriers of cumbersome mechanisms, contribute to change, create flexible and effective operations of the country's organizations and apparatus.

First performed in 1985, with a duration of over 3 hours, the play was performed continuously many times in Ho Chi Minh City and attracted a large audience.

“Although 41 years have passed, the work’s vitality is still very strong, carrying profound humanistic values and hot topicality. This is truly a timeless script by Luu Quang Vu – the most outstanding playwright in Vietnam. The 2025 version promises to continue to promote ideological values and bring the breath of contemporary life,” said People’s Artist Trung Hieu.

The program “Television Stage” with the play “Me and Us” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on June 1 at the Workers’ Theater, and will be recorded and broadcast live on channel H2 and other platforms of Hanoi Radio.

After that, the program continued to introduce other unique traditional art forms such as reformed opera, tuong, cheo... to contribute to preserving and promoting national cultural values on all modern media platforms./.

The play “Me and Us” is directed by People’s Artist Trung Hieu, with the participation of artists: Meritorious Artist Duc Quang, Meritorious Artist Thien Tung, Meritorious Artist Ngoc Quynh, Tien Loc, Thanh Huong, Diem Quynh and a group of artists, actors, and musicians from Hanoi Drama Theater.
