A daring gold theft has just been discovered in Urumqi city, Xinjiang autonomous region (China). Over the course of 3 years, a female employee named Xiao Mei stole 45.8kg of gold from the jewelry store where she worked, the total value of this gold is about 18.94 million yuan (nearly 66 billion VND).
According to local media, Xiao Mei started working at a gold jewelry store in Urumqi in the fall of 2021. Due to her outstanding sales skills, she was quickly promoted to counter manager. After taking over the new position, Xiao Mei quickly discovered loopholes in the store's management system and began planning to steal the gold.

Every day when she went to work, Xiao Mei stole some jewelry. She volunteered to work overtime to gain the trust of her boss, Mr. Ma. As a result, Xiao Mei was given the responsibility of taking inventory of the store's goods.
The incident was only discovered when Xiao Mei asked for leave and Mr. Ma took the inventory himself. He discovered that the store had lost 45.8 kg of gold jewelry and suspected that Xiao Mei was involved, so he immediately reported it to the police.
After being arrested, Tieu My confessed to the method of stealing and consuming gold. She and her boyfriend used lead blocks of equivalent weight to replace the gold jewelry. The couple used the money from selling the stolen gold to pay off debts and for spending and shopping.
According to the investigation, Xiao Mei and her boyfriend stole a total of 45,814.87 grams of gold with a conversion value of up to 18.94 million yuan (about 65.7 billion VND). Currently, the police have only recovered about 5 million yuan (equivalent to 17.3 billion VND). Xiao Mei and her boyfriend were arrested and transferred to the prosecution agency on charges of embezzlement of public funds, awaiting trial.
The case has shaken the gold jewelry industry in Xinjiang, raising concerns about security and management in high-value jewelry stores. Nearly all local gold stores have taken a general inventory of their assets following the incident.
